Awesome Tenor!, May 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Ancient of Days (Audio CD)
I have all of Charles Gayle's CDs, and in my opinion this is his very best. His earlier CDs were fearsome displays of raw energy and ferocious technique, but ANCIENT OF DAYS is more soulful and intelligient. Gayle is truly committed to innovation; he refuses to rest on his laurels. This CD has less of the pyrotechnics which characterized previous releases. Instead, he explores here the gospel tradition in an idiom derived from Coltrane and Ayler; but unlike Ayler, Gayle never lapses into sentimentality. This is a disc of magnificient beauty and supreme creativity. Gayle never relies on riffs or repetition of any kind, and he always something interesting to say. The back-up players are all very fine, and Gayle sticks to tenor throughout on this release. Pure enjoyment from start to finish.

(Nearly) Inside Gayle, February 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Ancient of Days (Audio CD)
Charles Gayle brings his music in from way outside to create a very enjoyable album. Shades of Ornette Coleman, Archie Shepp and even Sonny Rollins can be heard in his playing, though his sound is still distinctively his own. If you like Gayle but wondered whether you needed another CD by him, by all means buy this one.

Ancient of Days Stinks and is non-commercial (...)!, November 28, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Ancient of Days (Audio CD)
This is just Pure Noise with sharp out of tune horns contrasted with a good bassist. Besides being noise,I do not reccomend this recording to the timid average listner who does not have the hard skin to take such abuse from a recording that is just artistically non profit junk.
