Grade 4-7-This is not just another introductory series about ancient cultures and historical periods. Instead, the books are presented as travel guides with topics such as those found in any Fodor's or Fielding's guides-accomodations, what to wear, shopping, eating out, sight-seeing, etc. Each two-page spread has copious full-color illustrations and photographs and an easy-to-understand, lively text that informs readers/tourists about the offerings of ancient Egypt and prerevolution Paris. The latter discusses the political instability of that time and warns tourists about the hazards of visiting the city in a "Travel alert" section. Both titles include a fold-out map that shows possible tours. An ingenious, creative format for presenting history in an immediate, up-to-date way.

My son (age 10) chose this book to help him with a school project. I stayed up late that night reading it myself! Lots of interesting facts, a pull out map, a good index, and in a format that is appealing to a variety of ages. You can read it as if you are pretending to go on a trip to Egypt, or just as a collection of interesting pictures with captions. I highly recommend it.
