Book Description

10 and up5 and up
Did you know that the process of mummification took seventy days or that the ancient Egyptians practiced the earliest known form of dentistry? Ancient Egypt is an illustrated gift pop-up book featuring facts like this and more about the history of Egypt and showcases art and artifacts from the British Museum's massive Egyptian Antiquities collection. A wonderfully interactive, engaging, and informative text complements the creative pop-ups, showcasing various ancient Egyptian cultural innovations and making it fun for children and adults alike. Readers can learn about the elaborate embalming and mummification process that has fascinated archaeologists and the curious alike, explore the inside of an Egyptian pyramid replicated in pop-up, discover the mysterious ancient rites of an Egyptian god's temple, and translate code-like hieroglyphic symbols. Colorful, informative, and fun, Ancient Egypt is a wonderfully fascinating book for people of all ages who are interested in ancient Egypt.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8--Clever paper engineering, interesting photographs, and short paragraphs all work together to create an engaging book. Each of the seven spreads features a striking pop-up surrounded by supporting information. For example, the first pages detail how Egypt's civilization grew up on the banks of the Nile River. The accompanying pop-up of a boat is eye-catching and informative. The rest of the book follows suit with major topics such as the pyramids, pharaohs, fine art and crafts, temples and gods, and mummies all included. The writing is straightforward with little speculation and no anecdotal additions. The graphics are an artful mélange of photographs of artifacts and beautiful color drawings that effectively work together. A number of flaps open to maps and smaller pop-ups. The only drawback is that an occasional pop-up blocks some of the text, forcing readers to move the book around to get better views. While some librarians may be reluctant to include this title in a circulating collection, it would make a great addition to reference or browsing shelves and classroom collections. Milton Meltzer's In the Days of the Pharaohs (Watts, 2001) and Romano Solbiati's Ancient Egypt (Raintree, 2001) offer more in-depth information but don't have the graphic, hands-on appeal of this title. A strong contender for libraries needing additional material on the topic.--Jody Kopple, Shady Hill School, Cambridge, MA

5.0 out of 5 stars Pop Ups, Wonderful Pop Ups!, November 11, 2003

This review is from: The Ancient Egypt Pop-up Book: In Association with the British Museum (Hardcover)
A truly wonderful book. As a collector of pop up books, I believe this example to be first rate. The pop ups are imaginative and, if I may, are on the same level of excellence with those of Robert Sabuda. The text reflects the expertise that one might expect of the British Museum. Hugely entertaining.
