Chapter 1 Gods Egyptian Name- Neter

There were more than 1700 Gods and Goddesses identified with the Ancient Egyptians. All of these grew from a few original Gods. There were many variations of the same God (see the section of "Horus the God" in the Special Categories chapter). As each new God was introduced, he/she was usually given part of the same name, form , or meaning of the previous God. Sometimes a God would have as many as seven names when combining these Gods. Each district (nome) or deity throughout Egypt as combining these same Gods over and over again, to say nothing of what the conquerors of Egypt did, They would try to make the existing Gods conform to their Gods, in order to keep the trust of the conquered people, and consequently a time progressed, an attempt was made to reduce the Gods from many to one; this was accomplished by giving one God up to 200 different names and forms. Monotheism was totally accomplished with the adoption of Christianity in Egypt. Many of these ancient Gods! and Goddesses can be seen in today’s saints.

As you will note from the lists in the chapters on Gods and Goddesses, many are often listed under both sexes. The statues of them often depicted them having male and female parts, and usually some animal form also.

This review is from: Ancient Egyptian Names for Dogs (Paperback)
Having written for several online communities where Ancient Egypt is one of the time periods, this book has proven to be invalauable. The biggest problem for people there is finding good, authentic character names for themselves and their storylines. Ms. Durr's book, though intended as a resource for breeders and owners of Pharaoh Hounds, has been invaluable to me and other writers on the respective websites. It has given people a great place to start with very good suggestions as to what to name their characters.

The book is filled with thousands of names of Pharaohs, Queens, god-names, Egyptian symbols, sacred animals, Nomes and Districts in Ancient Egypt and different Ancient Egyptian words and phrases that are translated into the English. The lists are broken down to masculine and feminine names to help cut down on confusion.

I have recommended this book to other writers and they have commented that it is very helpful. If you are also an animal lover and have a dog or cat that you want to give a powerful and "different" name coming from Ancient Egypt, this is an excellent resource.
