Gr 5-8--Two useful series entries. People describes the lives of the members of 13 ancient Egyptian classes and professions, including pharaohs, peasants, priests, women, mummy-makers, tomb-builders, and servants. Each group's rank, role in society, and responsibilities in the community are examined. Places describes 13 different areas, such as the desert, the tomb, the pyramid, the factory, and the house. One section focuses on the Nile, discussing its uses and the community's dependence upon this sacred river. Both books feature attractive black-and-white and full-color illustrations of artifacts and landscapes. The writing is clear and concise and the chapters are well organized. These titles are more attractive and accessible than those in the "Ancient World" series (Silver Burdett), and will be useful for school reports.
