Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-Divided into five periods from the Old Kingdom, about 2686 B.C., to the declining New Kingdom, about 245 B.C., this book profiles some 30 Egyptian leaders, devoting a three- to seven-page chapter to each one. A preface to each section discusses the period's history, and a closing chapter offers biographical sketches of lesser-known individuals of the era. The entries are well written and researched, and concentrate on burial customs and tomb planning, construction, and artwork. Sidebars provide dates of influence and major accomplishments. Sources quoted include tomb inscriptions, writings of ancient historians, and archaeologists. Black-and-white photographs of artifacts, tombs, and statues are well matched with text. Appendixes include explanations of rulers' names and short biographies of foreign-born rulers of Egypt during the decline of the New Kingdom. A useful addition for report writers and subject enthusiasts.

From Booklist

Gr. 6-12. The Bakers' third contribution to the Oxford Profiles series (the first two covered the ancient Greeks and Romans) is a meticulously detailed, well-researched text that pieces together fragmented collections of Egyptian writing, art, and architecture to create a very comprehensive resource. Biographies of historically significant men and women are at the heart of the book, with information on the political, social, and artistic contributions made by each subject encapsulated in sidebar information and supported by plenty of photographs. The three-column format and small print allow much information to be packed into very little space. Some may find the format rather daunting, but the writing is accessible as well as intelligent. A worthwhile acquisition for both middle- and high-school libraries. Roger Leslie
