Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-4--Two books that fill the large void for quality world history titles geared toward the early elementary grades. Both titles are historically accurate, visually arresting, and age-appropriate. The easy-to-read texts cover each topic on a double-page spread. Outstanding, full-color photographs of museum artifacts, maps, diagrams, and drawings appear throughout. Colorful sidebars add to the informational richness of each subject. (Indeed, this is "Eyewitness" quality illustration with "New True Book" readability.) The general scope of these titles is an appropriate balance of succinct introductory facts that highlight the social, economic, political, and cultural life of the civilization in clear, larger-than normal print type. In Egyptians, for example, coverage includes the pharaohs, their gods, pyramids, and mummies, while in Greeks, special topics such as the gods, Olympic games, and theater accompany information on fashion, family life, trade, etc. In addition, each volume concludes with a useful historical time line, glossary, and index. Children with an interest in ancient times, peoples, and places will savor these titles.
