Great Living Books for Art History,
This review is from: Ancient Greek Art (Art in History) (Paperback)
I am a huge fan of the books in this Art in History series which we use as living art supplements to our homeschool history studies.
The text is easy to read because it is divided into visually appealing chunks. The text includes all the basic vocabulary you need to know to discuss art from the historical period featured. Those vocabulary words are in bold within the text and also listed in a glossary at the end of the book. Of course an art book must be replete with ART. These books are packed with full color photographs of a well-rounded sampling of art from the period -- architecture, paintings, sculpture, pottery, etc. The famous things that first come to mind are included. For example, the Ancient Greek Art volume devotes a half page to the Parthenon, giving lots of historical details along with the large photograph. In this way, the art book will reinforce what you've read in your history books. Each volume also includes one or two hands-on craft ideas to experiment with media or techniques relevant to the historical period. |
