Misnamed "ancient," this reproduction of an Italian deck is certainly limited by its absence of concrete images so valuable in tarot reading and interpretation. Although it is almost surely true that the Italians are the originators of the modern tarot deck, this deck is by no means ancient; the 14th century Italians understood the importance of integrating artistic beauty with utilitarian form. This sad, 19th century version of those earlier and far nobler efforts is useful more as an amusement and stands as a mere echo of those former decks. Eschew this frolicsome effort and seek out earlier or even later tarot representations.
