5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for studying Maya culture
You can buy many books, from those marketed to youngsters to those appealing only to the serious researcher and scholar. But if you are looking for solid information, and a basic introduction, Lila Perl's book is a great starter. A time line and a glossary of rulers is an important addition. 3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
The book was a factual presentation of the Maya world, but was more technical than narrative and although it was fairly concise in specifics it did not give a feel for the civilization's method of life.

You can buy many books, from those marketed to youngsters to those appealing only to the serious researcher and scholar. But if you are looking for solid information, and a basic introduction, Lila Perl's book is a great starter. A time line and a glossary of rulers is an important addition. The book gives proper recognition to John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood whose work 100 years ago sparked today's interest in these incredible people. I particularly like the way it details ordinary Mayan life, from the point of view of the farmer and worker, as well as giving a look inside the ruling class (too many books of this type cut right to the top, and as with all civilizations, the foundation of "ordinary" people is, well, the foundation). Perl does not leave you in the past, but gives an update on current, and thriving, Maya culture.
