About the Author

Peter Armstrong was educated at Keswick School in Cumbria after which he spent some time abroad and at sea before taking a degree in Fine Art at Maidstone College of Art. He worked throughout the 1970s as a Secondary School art teacher in Cumbria during which time his fascination with military history and modelmaking led him to produce his first model soldier. More followed and in time a small scale production line was set up to satisfy growing demand. This led to Pete being able to leave full time teaching in the early 1980s to develop his embryonic modelmaking sideline into a full time business. Pete is the sculptor behind Border Miniatures and his books are the fruit of his many years of modelling experience and research.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for the serious figure modeler, August 15, 2001

If you're a novice looking for a step-by-step how-to book, keep looking. This volume is for the modeler who already has some experience with building and painting kits, but perhaps hasn't yet worked with human figures much. There are handy tips here, it's just that the emphasis is on customizing figures and creating a backdrop for them. Armstrong is a modeler who places a premium on accuracy, and his comments on achieving the proper detailing for his figures are informative and reveal the broader educational opportunities inherent in this hobby. There is also a helpful bibliography included. As far as modeling itself, the strength of this book is in the imaginative and ingenious ways in which Armstrong creates convincing, interesting sets for his figures, and for this aspect alone, the book is well worth the price. Highly recommended for the serious enthusiast.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good review of techniques, limited subject matter, August 19, 2002

Armstrong is an accomplished modeler and figure manufacturer. The book has a focus on British Medieval figures with much discussion on heraldry for that area. Other parts of the medieval world are given scant attention.

He demonstrates many techniques for building both metal figures and scenes to place them in. His techniques for building castle sections for figure displays was very interesting. He does not discuss painting techniques much except for burnishing and polishing armor.

All in all a good reference for those wishing to model British medieval subjects.
