fascinating old variant tarot deck, November 5, 1998
This review is from: Ancient Minchiate Etruria Deck (Paperback)
For several centuries, there was a variant game of tarot called Minchiate, played in and around Florence, Italy. The cards differ from an ordinary tarot pack in that there are 41 trumps (major arcana), rather than the usual 22. The extras include all the signs of the zodiac, the four elements, and the virtues Prudence, Faith, Hope, and Charity. There are other variations, too: the knights are centaurs, and the traditional trumps II through V are replaced by Grand Duke, Western Emperor, and Eastern Emperor. This reproduction is from a 1725 deck, and the artwork is exquisite--reminiscent of the engraved figures on antique maps and star atlases. The deck is probably most interesting to tarot collectors, although I do find it wonderful to read with. With the zodiac signs represented, it might be an interesting deck for people with an interest in astrology to try.
