Wide range, but not great writings,

On the positive side, this anthology contains a wide range of retellings of myth, from Gilgamesh to the Founding of Rome. Stories are included from Sumerian, Iranian, Greek, Roman, and other sources, and this provides a reasonable overview of some of the mythical tales and outlooks across the ancient world.
However, I found the retellings to be less gripping than I would like, and more or less useless for serious mythical analysis. All in all, I think it is a book which will be useful to people looking for a survey of mythic tales, but one that people outgrow fairly fast. |
