Gr 6-9-This title begins with an interesting discussion of the meaning of the word technology as it relates to weapons. Individual chapters outline their development from 6000 B.C. to A.D. 476 in the Middle East, Egypt, China, Mesoamerica, Greece, Rome, and India. In general, the text explains how various weapons were fashioned or invented by one group and modified by another as various metals and other materials became available. The authors do a good job of explaining how the individual weapons work. The first three pages of each chapter feature highlighted topic headings and photographs of artifacts against tan-colored pages resembling parchment. Additionally, half- to full-page, full-color photos of weaponry, armor, and artwork with military themes appear throughout. A map showing the ancient civilizations follows the introduction. An attractive, accessible title for young military buffs and students of technology and ancient history.-Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS
