Review

Quite a book here! Much work, beautiful systemization, and intriguing discoveries. Chadbourne's new book is REALLY new: it digs into the past for renewed dimensionality for astrology's future; it revives the undeniable values of the sidereal scheme in a most significant way within the Western tradition; it systemizes a fresh concept of time measurement that is intriguing in its premise, attractive in its subtlety, and promising in its potentials. The expertly written text shows us how to embellish and rearrange the body of knowledge we have to make new discoveries. These findings and Chadbourne's creativity are not really "Whispers" at all: they sing loud and clear for all of us to hear. -- Noel Tyl, Astrologer

We know that earliest astrology was observational - sunrise at different times of year brought changing lengths of shadows during the day, and sunset began the night watch of the sky. "Ancient Whispers from Chaldea," an extensive exploration of astrology's pre-Greek roots, has been informed by the author's long (26 years) research of Babylonian and Egyptian texts that recorded celestial observations along with other aspects of life. Arthyr Chadbourne's book demonstrates techniques that he has developed and tested, based on his interpretation of the existing ancient sources; much of it is speculative, as the specifically astrological written sources are scarce. Mr Chadbourne uses his understanding of the ancient world to present a model of astrology that is historically, philosophically, and spiritually rich, and replete with practical techniques at the same time. As did the ancients, the methods in the book use only sidereal measurements; the author, however, presents this work as an adjunct to modern tropical astrology -- it is not viewed as a replacement, but rather an enhancement of contempory practice. ...One of the many fascinting ideas born from this scheme is that the position of the Sun in the birth chart wil reveal at which age a "true solar return" will occur for the individual, resulting in a strong "wake-up call" and events of life changing importance. Since each house has a value of six years, the natal Sun at the IC, for instance, heralds this wake-up call at age 18, earlier in life than for an individual born with the Sun at the Midheaven, where the true solar return occurs at age 54. In the sunset chart itself, which can be used even if a birth time is unknown, the first aspect that the moon makes and the first planet to cross an angle are seen as defining influences in the life. When there is a known birth time, the birth chart is placed inside the sunset chart and the two are compared for timing. To use in forcasting, one can surmise upcoming events from previous events; the author stresses the importance of TALKING with the client. ...This book is an abundant resource from a third generation astrologer in love with his subject. It will be welcomed by serious astrologers who are interested in exploring the sources and roots of their work. -- Mary Plumb, The Mountain Astrologer Feb/Mar 2000

About the Author

Arthyr W. Chadbourne is a third generation astrologer who has long been an advocate for exploring new dimensions of awareness in the astrological field. As a practicing astrologer and researcher, his open acknowledgement of individual spirituality as the core of the astrological chart has put him on the cutting edge of those in astrology who are creating the metaphysical arts of the future. His client list reads like a who's who in the entertainment field and he is an astrological consultant for many captains of industry. The successful changes he has made in his own astrological practice prove he is a man not only of vision and deeds, but an author whose beliefs spring from the truths and experience of daily living.

5.0 out of 5 stars remarkable, August 3, 2000
This review is from: Ancient Whispers from Chaldea (Paperback)
This book is written in a very educational way: every chapter can be read alone without reading the whole book, the layout is superb so that your mind can grasp it easily. Wonderful. It is remarkable how much new information this book contains, though some of the material did remind me of the books by Ivy Goldstein-Jacobson ('the moon last over', stacks in declination rather than in longitude, etc...). I like the style and approach of the author though I'm not sure if it all works the way it should. I'll have to try calculating the sunset charts in the sidereal zodiac and use the stacks (30 degree wheel) and other techniques for some time. I have not found a delineation for the moon mansions (nakshatras in vedic astrology) in the book and miss it because I'm not sure if the same interpretations of the vedic or arabic mansions can be used. Some chapters are rather brief but the most important information is there. This book is recommended reading because of the fact that it opens our eyes for ancient techniques that may possibly be worth incorporating in our astrological work. I'm not sure if it can convince tropical astrologers to switch to the sidereal system. I think that both systems have their validity and that we should use them both as long as we respect the appropriate rules of the respective systems. Again it will be welcomed if some astrological software can incorporate these techniques so that delineating gets simpler and less timeconsuming.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Exception Work, January 29, 2000

This review is from: Ancient Whispers from Chaldea (Paperback)
I purchased this book and was amazed at the very deep and interesting views Chadbourne takes on the roots of astrology in Chaldea. One of his most interesting ideas is the "sunset chart" which puts a whole new twist on charts and prediction. This is a big book and has lots for the beginner as well as the advanced student. If you want to take a look at the foundations of astrology and see connections with todays modern world, get this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Listen When Chadbourne Whispers, February 2, 2000
This review is from: Ancient Whispers from Chaldea (Paperback)
Arthyr Chadbourne is an original and when orignals speak we ought to listen, there is much to be learned from the mind of this starship. Mr. Chadbourne has researched and unlocked keys of precise timing based on the knowledge Babylonian astrologers/astronomers learned from their years of observation and calculations. Mr Chadbourne's sunset chart hypothesis is, as he states, "a unique and bold idea of astrology." In adjusting his knowledge of ancient ideas to modern knowledge, Mr. Chadbourne leads us down no ordinary garden path; rather it is one of dynamic growth, and learning, much like the Babylonian idea of finding the date and time for any given phenomena, unlike Greek astronomers who searched celestial locations for a given time. Like his Chaldean predecessors, Mr. Chadbourne's methodology has a singular ability to personalize a chart that is rarely accomplished by others. In using his tools and techniques, I have found it's as he states, "the birth chart is so powerful it may be considered a cosmic DNA program..."

For serious astrologers, interested in moving into uncharted territory this is a must buy book full of ideas, mathmatics, tools, and rules for re-examining the chart. You will see yourself and your clients/friends/family differently. What a gift!
