I found myself thinking when I read the introduction "No change there then" as I contemplated the mix of corrupt politicians, bureaucrats looking after their own and their paymasters in commerce and industry. Dodge has woven a very clever plot, drawing on all the ills that beset the "European Experiment." I confess to being one of those who believes that if western culture s to survive, Europe must find a way to unite - but I will also confess that the present setup is not the way forward.

Dodge has created a believable scenario, one which threatens to arise long before the postulated date in this story. The characters are well developed, the dialogues realistic and the story fast moving. It draws on all the current ills projecting them to logical outcomes if the current path is continued. It is a good read, one which will be enjoyed by those who wish to see the present political dispensation in Europe fail, but which others will find equally informative.

As someone else has remarked here, those who ignore their past are doomed to repeat its failures. As Dodge has shown in this fictional future, if the present political course is maintained, the failures of the present and the past will come back - with a vengeance.

I have no trouble commending this book.Their Lordships Request: A Harry Heron Adventure Out Of Time The Enemy is Within!

The year is 2034 and remnants of the former European nation states have consolidated their governments to become the vast "European Union" . . . a bungling bureaucracy rife with corruption, cowardice and ineptitude.

Despite Union attempts to crack down on rebellions - or perhaps because of those attempts - secessionist movements have taken root across the provinces. Some groups are peaceful. But many are utterly ruthless and hungry for power.

The three common threads running through the most militant groups of dissenters are: their hatred for the Union; their leaders' lust for power; and their arms supplier . . . a faceless menace known to the insurrectionist community only as "Pius."

AND GLORY is an adrenaline-pumping journey through the deception, treachery and carnage of these unsettled times in the Union. And when I say carnage, I'm talking serious death and destruction. In the first fifty pages alone, hundreds die by such diverse means as vehicle bombs, sniper bullets, building explosions, and even homicide by eighteen-wheeler . . . all conceived and executed pursuant to the machinations of the puppet-master -- Pius.

Sure, this is a heart-pounding action thriller of a story. But it is much more than that. In putting the often pointless violence of the insurrection, and the bungling responses by Union politicians and police on display, Dodge reminds the reader that "those who forget history are doomed to repeat it" - especially when the actors are motivated by their own cravings for power . . . AND GLORY.

I won't spoil Dodge's clever plot twists and futuristic manipulations by revealing them here. Suffice it to say that he combines them into a story that will give you one helluva ride. The prose is taut and the action nearly non-stop.

Terrorism is defined as "the calculated use of violence (or the threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or religious or ideological in nature".

Some SF writers (see Robert Heinlein) already predicted a future where resort to terrorism for a huge number of reasons is a daily occurrence. In Europe, which fragile unity is being teared apart by nationalistic, religious and economic strife, we may see this kind of future coming quite soon.

Andre Ian Dodge shows a pretty believable version of this future, where a European mandarin uses the inefficient bureaucratic juggernaut to further his own dark designs, killing anyone standing in his way.

The highly entertaining plot turns and twists through the dark corners of the empire, making the book a worthy reading, so I wouldn't spoil it for you by telling more. Just to mention the active participation of two attractive female cyborgs to whet your appetites... So go and buy the book!
