Editorial Reviews

"Rather than make a traditional covers record, I thought it would be much more fun to create a new type of project in which artists communicated with each other and swapped a song for a song, i.e. you do one of mine and I ll do one of yours, hence the title - Scratch My Back - And I ll Scratch Yours.

Although, at first, I hoped to have the companion record out at the same time, it became clear it would take a while longer pulling in the second record with all the other artists. This will come later." - Peter Gabriel in 2010

Three years later, and And I'll Scratch Yours is here. Given the calibre and careers of the artists Gabriel selected to cover on the Scratch My Back album it s rather incredible that all but two of them are present on this new release. The two absentees being ably replaced by Feist and Joseph Arthur.

Though the cover versions on Scratch were all arranged for an orchestra, no such parameters were placed on the song-swap, making And I'll Scratch Yours a fascinatingly diverse record.

It's very well worth hearing and there's some great stuff on it.

If you like: A. Peter Gabriel, B. Any of the artists here; C. Great music; and/or any combination of the above, give this a try.

I would have preferred a new album of new songs rather than this two album covers project.

This album is a sort of repaying of the compliment by many of the artists whose songs Peter Gabriel covered on his Scratch My Back album in 2010. Whatever you thought of that album (I wasn't all that keen) I'd suggest giving this a try. It's very well worth hearing and there's some great stuff on it.

I really like hearing other takes on familiar Peter Gabriel songs, partly because they are so familiar and a new version really makes me listen to what the song is about again. There are also some genuinely excellent performances here, although which ones you think they are will probably depend on your personal taste. For me, the distinctively Bon Iver version of Come Talk To Me, Paul Simon's largely acoustic Biko and David Byrne being David Byrne in I Don't Recall stand out, and both Arcade Fire and Elbow surprised me by producing really good versions of Games Without Frontiers and Mercy Street respectively. You may disagree with all of that, of course. Similary, lots of listeners will probably love Lou Reed's version of Solsbury Hill, whereas I think he utterly murders a beautiful song which has meant a lot to me for three decades and more. You'll have to form your own judgement.

It's hard to give an overall rating, but there's a lot of really first-rate stuff here and I've given it five stars on that basis. I would urge any Peter Gabriel fan to try this. You'll probably love some tracks and dislike others, but I reckon it's well worth a try and there are a lot of tracks here that I will be playing for years to come, I suspect. Warmly recommended.

(By the way, this is also packaged with Scratch My Back in a very reasonably-priced double CD if you don't already have it Scratch My Back/And...(Ltd.Edt.) )

This was a "must-buy" for me, as I've been a Peter Gabriel fan since he was with Genesis. Each classic-period album he made was an event for me, and in retrospect I hear them as part of a cinematic "soundtrack of my life." Now, having been informed by everything that's happened musically since, from Talking Heads to Bon Iver, Arcade Fire and everyone else, the songs here simultaneously evoke memories of past eras and serve signposts to other corners of my musical mind. Quite a wonderful experience!

Everyone will have their favorites here, whether resulting from memories of the originals or admiration for the new interpreting artist. The best part for me, though, is when the synergies of past and present create new pieces that are "greater than the sum of the parts." This happens several times here, but one notable example is Regina Spektor's cover of "Blood of Eden." I liked the song to begin with (it was on Gabriel's "US" album) and I've enjoyed Spektor's work on several albums, but this interpretation takes both the song and Regina to a new level.

There are MANY other examples. You'll find the same "synergy" magic happening over and over again in other songs here.

If you like: A. Peter Gabriel, B. Any of the artists here; C. Great music; and/or any combination of the above, give this a try. You won't be disappointed!

This album is (mostly) a response Peter Gabriel's 2010 collection of cover songs "Scratch My Back", with (most of) the artists whose songs Gabriel sang on that album reciprocating by performing Gabriel's songs. (A few backed out of the project or declined to participate, sadly including David Bowie, Radiohead, Neil Young and Ray Davies.)

So don't expect a single, unified musical experience here. "Scratch My Back", which features Peter Gabriel performing with piano and chamber orchestra, was definitely an excellent, high-concept musical experience as the songs all share similar orchestral colors. Like most tribute albums, I found "And I'll Scratch Yours" to be a hit-and-miss hodgepodge with brilliant moments but also less brilliant ones. Overall, I was not very satisfied with the collection.

I found the brightest spots when the artists did a similarly thorough deconstruct of Gabriel's music as he did in his own covers, which featured chamber orchestra and often left only the barest of threads recognizable compared to the original. For example, when the late, great Lou Reed transforms the light and airy "Solsbury Hill" into a dystopian, arrhythmic fuzz-guitar fest. I had never heard of Joseph Arthur before, but he actually pulls a somewhat similar feat with "Shock the Monkey". Feist (who I previously knew mainly from my son's Sesame Street DVD, where she sings a wonderful song about counting to four) also does an excellent, stripped down "Don't Give Up".

Another highlight is Randy Newman's take on the hit "Big Time". Of course it comes out dripping with irony that was not as obvious in the original.

Like an amazing body of work seen through a prism, this collection of covers breathes new life into PG's classics. Not every cover feels inspired, but if nothing else they make you want to head back to the original to remember why you loved it so much. It is a matter of taste which versions you dig the most here, and I found Bon Iver's "Come Talk to Me" to be the most brilliant conversion, as his falsetto and ethereal production really lend themselves to an already amazing song. Definitely pick up the double cd Scratch My Back/And I'll Scratch Yours if you haven't purchased either one- it's a journey.
