Editorial Reviews

Foxygen have joined Star Power.
It is a punk band, and you can be in it, too.
Star Power is the radio station that you can hear only if you believe.
We're all stars of the scene.

Foxygen…And Star Power is the 2014 double album from Foxygen, a CINEMATIC AUDITORY ADVENTURE for the speedy freaks, skull krunchers, abductees, and misfits...Made by Foxygen at Dream Star Studios in their Secret Haunted House with the UFOs flying around in the sky.

A gaggle of guest stars. Roman-numeraled musical suites. Vocals recorded on a shoddy tape machine at The Beverly Hills Hotel and Chateau Marmont. A svelte 82-minute run time of psych-ward folk, cartoon fantasia, songs that morph into each other, weaving in and out of the head like UFO radio transmission skullkrush music. ADHD star power underground revolution. Soft-rock indulgences, D&D doomrock and paranoid bathroom rompers. Process is the point. A kaleidoscoping view. Blasphemy even the gods smile one. Rock and roll for the skull...*

*From Patty Smith's 1973 CREEM review of Todd Rundgren's A Wizard, A True Star. The section concludes "Todd Rundgren is preparing us for a generation of frenzied children who will dream in animation."

Foxygen has such potential and there are many glimpses of it on this double disc release. The band came up with some really good ideas for music which they were unable to flush out musically. Such a shame too when considering their last release was so much fun.

I will start by saying that I love Foxygen- We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic was easily one of my favorite albums for some time and I saw them recently (Boston) and they were awesome. Unfortunately …And Star Power is just a mess. There are fragments of genius here-some of the sounds are really great. You just have to get through a bunch of slop to get the gems. I am sure they thought they were putting together some brilliant concept album, borrowing from VU to create a modern noise rock/punk/psychedelic masterpiece, but it just feels like a bloated mess which could have used quite a bit of editing to make a single great album rather than 2 overwrought albums.

The live show was amazing, with the backup singers bringing a great dimension and energy to many of these songs that is just lacking on the album.

I bought this cd with high hopes that it would be like their last album "We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic" which I absolutely can not get enough of.
After reading a few reviews, I got a little worried that this might not be the same Foxygen that I had come to love--(which it wasn't) but even though these guys took a different turn...I am hooked again. One listen is all it took to know that I would be listening to this one just as much.

It is definitely different from their last effort & at times a little crazy & erratic which may turn some people away. Of course if you are looking into this kind of music then like myself, this is the kind of craziness you like anyway...right?

So don't hesitate, buy this album now!
I had to order it through Amazon because sadly enough, on the first day of release I went to multiple stores excited to pick up this album and not one place carried it / So hard to find good music that's not mainstream at any retailer anymore. I am looking forward to many future releases from these guys.

The album is fantastic. The first disc is packed with catchy 70s sounding pop/ soft rock while the second disc is like an avant garde garage rock show. It's a bit different than their previous album, but still very satisfying. Foxygen's might rip off their songs from classic rock bands, but it works. You can hear hints of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, ELO, Black Sabbath, and many more throughout the album. '...And Star Power' also has some very satisfying guests on a few of the tracks. I've been listening to the album on repeat all week.

Definitely a candidate for album of the year. Great rock opera, double LP, which could have been released in 1972 and been a hit! Some songs are more pop, others more punk, but this is one of those albums you listen to as a whole collective piece. Foxygen is a great young band, will be spinning this record for a while.

Took several online listens to this album before I was convinced to purchase it. I'm now of the opinion it has a place among the great rock/alternative double albums. The work seems to spring from a muse which transcends the artists. It is a vibrant document of the current culture, yet maintains a timelessness necessary for a masterpiece and has deep music roots going back 50 years. The work as a whole fits together: every song having its place, nothing there not belonging. It is rough & jagged, yet maintains a rarefied melodic sweetness & emotive cerebral atmosphere evocative of the Stones during the late 60's. Finding a great album is like digging gold out of the dirt: always an exciting find:) I'm still digesting "...and Star Power" but so far it seems to have its place among the greats such as Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation" and Beastie Boys "Ill Communication". Check it out on Spotify & see if you are drawn in.

The really just kind of dumped everything and the kitchen sink into an album and expected people to think it's brilliant. I'm a huge fan of the Elephant Six collective, so it's not like I'm against those types of sound experiments. But this just feels forced.
