In May 2011, Foxygen's Sam France and Jonathan Rado nervously handed off a CD-R of their homemade mini-opus Take the Kids Off Broadway to producer and visionary Richard Swift after his performance in a Lower East Side club. The duo, who had just mixed and burned the disc that very night, had been devotees of Swift's outsider-pop oeuvre since high school, when they first began recording ... Editorial Reviews

Foxygen have joined Star Power.
It is a punk band, and you can be in it, too.
Star Power is the radio station that you can hear only if you believe.
We're all stars of the scene.

Foxygen…And Star Power is the 2014 double album from Foxygen, a CINEMATIC AUDITORY ADVENTURE for the speedy freaks, skull krunchers, abductees, and misfits...Made by Foxygen at Dream Star Studios in their Secret Haunted House with the UFOs flying around in the sky.

A gaggle of guest stars. Roman-numeraled musical suites. Vocals recorded on a shoddy tape machine at The Beverly Hills Hotel and Chateau Marmont. A svelte 82-minute run time of psych-ward folk, cartoon fantasia, songs that morph into each other, weaving in and out of the head like UFO radio transmission skullkrush music. ADHD star power underground revolution. Soft-rock indulgences, D&D doomrock and paranoid bathroom rompers. Process is the point. A kaleidoscoping view. Blasphemy even the gods smile one. Rock and roll for the skull...*

*From Patty Smith's 1973 CREEM review of Todd Rundgren's A Wizard, A True Star. The section concludes "Todd Rundgren is preparing us for a generation of frenzied children who will dream in animation."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great rock opera October 15, 2014
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
Definitely a candidate for album of the year. Great rock opera, double LP, which could have been released in 1972 and been a hit! Some songs are more pop, others more punk, but this is one of those albums you listen to as a whole collective piece. Foxygen is a great young band, will be spinning this record for a while.

The album is fantastic. The first disc is packed with catchy 70s sounding pop/ soft rock while the second disc is like an avant garde garage rock show. It's a bit different than their previous album, but still very satisfying. Foxygen's might rip off their songs from classic rock bands, but it works. You can hear hints of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, ELO, Black Sabbath, and many more throughout the album. '...And Star Power' also has some very satisfying guests on a few of the tracks. I've been listening to the album on repeat all week.

3.0 out of 5 stars a retro-pastiche mish-mash of soft rock lunacy October 16, 2014
3rd release from duo living in New York & Olympia, Washington—Foxygen play a retro-pastiche mish-mash of soft rock lunacy with equal parts hook-driven melody, psychedelic yesteryear folk and experimental outer space lounge noise. It’s as if someone keeps interrupting a perfectly segued bit of early 60s AM radio pop with chaotic bits of humor and drug-addled eccentricities—but they always return to the song. Sort of like a free-form, self-indulgent rock opera with changing rhythms & themes hung on a cast of talented musicians tripping through a mushroom field of quirky pop melodies. Imagine Ween with absolutely nothing to hold on to, or the Beatles lost at sea without their Yellow Submarine. Includes contributions from members of Flaming Lips, White Fence, Of Montreal, Gnome, Bleached. Though moments of brilliance shine through, “…And Star Power” lacks much of the tongue-in-cheek charm and cohesiveness that characterized 2013’s brilliant “We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace & Magic” album. It’s still crazy & fun, but I’m left with no real desire to hear it again.
