Review of Andele: the Mexican-Kiowa Captive,
By Linda Robinson (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Andele, The Mexican-Kiowa Captive: A Story of Real Life Among the Indians (Paperback)
I received this book several years ago from my father. Andele was married to my grandmother's cousin. My father has told me about his memories of Andele as an old man, and of his gentle spirit and kindness. I finally got the opportunity to read this book recently. It sheds light on native American history I have studied with my children as a homeschool mother. You feel as if you were there experiencing what Andele experienced. I have also seen a copy of the original book written in 1899. It has many original pictures of Andele and others he lived with in captivity. I wish this edition still had those pictures.

Kiowa captive,

This review is from: Andele, The Mexican-Kiowa Captive: A Story of Real Life Among the Indians (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book, first written in 1899 and recently republished. I knew Andele's nephew through his last marriage and read his copy of this book. One of the other reviewers was probably a cousin of this man, Austin Wilson. there are very few books on Indians that were written at the time and by people that actually knew them. This is one of those.

This review is from: Andele, The Mexican-Kiowa Captive: A Story of Real Life Among the Indians (Paperback)
Andele, The Mexican-Kiowa Captive is a very factual and interesting book. Andele was married to my Great-Great Aunt. I was raised 3 houses from their home. From my studies and research on my family, this book is a very acurate account of Andele's life. If you are interested in Oklahoma History or Native American History, you will enjoy reading Andele.

A great book to read for fun. The introduction by the ethnohistorian is dull and narrow-minded. Don't let that deter you from reading the actual text. You won't be able to put it down when you get into the real thing. I'm amazed at Andele's ability to adapt and pick up new ways of life.

The book is great. I recommend it highly. It is the personal story on Jose Andres Martin'(ANDELE), my 2nd great grand uncle. His relatives are everywhere in S. Colorado and N. New Mexico. From Trinidad, CO to Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was a hard life but adaption seems to be the way to cope. Quite a story... There are many others out there, but not as well documented. Great book.

Way too much summary,
This review is from: Andele, The Mexican-Kiowa Captive: A Story of Real Life Among the Indians (Paperback)
While the story of how "Andele" was captured and grew up experiencing the unfamiliar Indian life is interesting and somewhat intriguing, the way it is told has too much summary. There is very little dialouge in the chapters so you really do not feel for any of the characters in the story or anything that happens to them. While it is mostly Andele's story, the book sidetracks to talk about other people's lives, so it distracts from the main storyline. It is a quick read which is nice, but is not a typical novel. I can only recommend it to the younger crowd, since it reads like a fictional storytelling.
