3.0 out of 5 stars Okay for occasional use
I bought these clippers for our poodle/schnauzer mix pup. Don't expect to sheer through fur like a hot knife through butter. You have to be patient and slow which is fine if your dog is willing to be patient too. The clippers do get warm when you start using them, but if you have the gaurds on then it won't harm your animal. Overall this is okay for an occasional...

I bought this model 7 years ago for over $100 and it is still running strong although I only use it to clip a small family dog. Nevertheless, forget the cheap vibrating 'magnetic motor' clippers - not enough power and the buzzing bothers the animal. This clipper uses a superior rotating motor that is more powerful and provides a consistent cutting action. In fact, with the right (replaceable) blade, you could use this to cut kids hair as well. It stays cool, unlike the magnetic motor design. Use with Oster Kool Lube and you will never have problems getting a clean cut. It uses blades by Oster so there is a lot of versatility possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent clipper for a great price, March 18, 2007

I have been using this clipper for my Standard Poodle for about 6 months now - I do his feet and face at least once a month - and it is great for all our needs. I have never taken him to a groomer, and have had show dog friends and pro groomers tell me he looks great with just the clipping we do with this clipper. All clippers will get hot - it's simply a law of physics: two pieces of metal rubbing together at high speed causes heat. I have extra blades and a damp cloth nearby when the blade gets hot. If you find the clipper "drags through the coat" it may be the same thing that happened to me when I first got it - the blade wasn't snapped down into position correctly and it wasn't clipping at all. For my Poodle, this clipper is fabulous, and the price can't be beat!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of FIVE we tried - the only one that worked on our Himalayan, June 15, 2009
This review is from: Andis 21420 Pro-Animal Detachable Ceramic Blade Clipper Kit (Health and Beauty)
This review was originally for the Andis MGB2 clipper body mated to the stainless "ultra edge 10" blade. For whatever reason, here at Amazon this combination is available in a multiplicity of model numbers based on included accessories and also many different vendors. The vendor for this review appears to have linked it to a slightly different clipper which appears to have the same body but a ceramic blade. The Ceramic blade should in theory stay sharper longer than a stainless blade but I can't speak to it's performance on fine hair as I haven't tried it.

Original review below:

Animals vary greatly in temperment so if you can borrow a friends clipper to try on your animal first I recommend it before making the investment. We have two cats so this clipper more or less paid for itself the first year in use.

We tried my sister's animal clipper the first year. The second year we tried two from Target and one from Petsmart. Finally bit the bullet and got this one from Petsmart. Pricier than the first we bought from them but worth it. (They were kind enough to let us return the first one)

In hindsight, if we had the option of buying the clipper only we would have as we don't need all the combs, and if you don't need the extras you can get the clipper by itself for a lot less. The black plastic molded case ours came with is very convenient, however.

Be careful when buying this clipper - the actual model of the clipper is MBG2 and it comes with a #10 blade. THERE ARE TWO ANDIS "PET PRO" CLIPPERS and the other one (The body is shorter, without the swoopy curve on the handle) doesn't get very good reviews.

Himalayan cats are like Persians and have massive amounts of extremely fine hair. The other clippers we tried bogged down immediately and got very hot. This blazes through and is also quieter and cooler than the other ones which is good since our Siamese is jumpy.

In terms of cat-trimming technique, we first trim all the nails (just in case) then sit on a chair on our deck, with a towel in our lap.

Cat in lap on towel, pet for a few minutes until they purr, then start clipping. It helps to keep some tension on their skin with the other hand. Imagine you are petting with your left hand to your left, and the clipper is in your right hand moving to your right.

My ratings: 1 star: Avoid! / 2 stars: Some merit but I can't recommend / 3 stars: Decent, nice / 4 stars: Recommended / 5 stars: Nearly perfect!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for home clipping, August 24, 2007

This review is from: Andis 21420 Pro-Animal Detachable Ceramic Blade Clipper Kit (Health and Beauty)
I had never clipped either dog or human before, but decided to try doing my Standard Schnauzer at home. He is the terror of all local groomers: they complain that he struggles the entire time, so it's been a headache for them and expensive for me. After researching home-use clippers at the Groomers BBS, I decided on this Andis clipper set and I am delighted. It is so quiet that my dog all but ignored it (except around his ears) and it cut through his very shaggy coat like butter. This clipper made easy a job that I had feared would be disastrous.
The comb attachments help to blend in the short and long coat areas on the Schnauzer. I followed the advice of the pros and bought an extra blade so that I could quickly swap them as they grew hot.

5.0 out of 5 stars The answer is YES!, June 25, 2009

UPDATE 8/9: After using this clipper for a while now, I'm very happy with it (despite the price dropping). It took a few times but now I can do both dogs very quickly in one sitting. I don't have a professional grooming table so I do this in the laundry room with the dog on top of the washer.

I would highly recommend using a disposable wee pad under them instead of a towel... the cut hairs are very tough to wash out (they seem to just weave themselves into cloth!)

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

These were the questions I had before buying this clipper:
*Does it really work that much better than human clippers? YES
*Is it quiet enough that it won't freak out my dogs? YES
*Will I be able to handle it well even though I have no professional grooming experience? YES
*Is it worth the price tag? YES

With two small dogs, I found that it managed to cut through their differing types of fur perfectly.

My Papillon mix has a double coat and it sliced through without any problems!

And the number #1 guard was the perfect length to use on my Maltese for that "puppy" cut.

I have no prior grooming experience so I just watched a bunch of online videos. This clipper seemed to work easily and fit into my hand just fine. It has a ceramic blade and it didn't feel like it got hot for a while (I managed to groom both dogs in one sitting). But since I was using a guard, it wasn't much of an issue.

This also has a quiet motor so it didn't freak the dogs out. And unlike the inexpensive human clippers, it doesn't make an abrupt noise when you first turn it on.

I received the item exactly as pictured: a purple cutter with 4 guards, small tube of oil and a black case everything fits into.

For my two small dogs, I don't feel like I need to buy other blades as the one that comes with it, along with the guards, seem to fit all of my needs right now. Again, I say this with inexperience...just relying on my satisfaction with the end result.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this clipper!

I was a professional dog groomer for many years and always used the high end Oster clippers. I needed something ASAP to groom my 3 Shih Tzu, did not have the money for the clippers I wanted (Oster A-5), so "settled" for the Andi's 21420. Was a little sluggish compared to the A-5, didn't exactly go through the hair like a knife through butter, but did a very adequate job! I guess the proof will be in how long they last as compared with the 12-15 years of my previous clippers.

We have a GoldenDoodle with a lot of hair and this clipper works wonderfully. It breezes right through the thickest hair! I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Andis 21420 7 pc clipper, November 3, 2006
This review is from: Andis 21420 Pro-Animal Detachable Ceramic Blade Clipper Kit (Health and Beauty)
The clipper comes in one speed, which is NOT disappointing. The two speed clipper tends to get too hot and this could severly hurt or damage a small dog with tender skin. It has all you need to begin, including clipper oil and a nice hard plastic suitcase type case. The clipper oiI that comes with is so tiny, I'd suggest purchasing a larger sized clipper oil separately, and if possible have it ready for your first job.

I think I need a more powerful clipper for my Shih Tzu. The clipper just drags through the coat. Probably a good clipper for a dog with a lot less hair. I'd rate this just an average professional dog clipper.
