Great for cats, too,

After researching all over the internet, I chose this clipper for our cat who gets mats in his long hair. His hair also gets oily at times if he doesn't groom it. So we are clipping him down to a shorter coat. This is my first time clipping any kind of animal, but I do "buzz" my husband's hair.
This clipper has the recommended blade for cats (#10) and four combs that attach with a metal clip to get different length cuts. Compared to my husband's clipper, this is much quieter and doesn't alarm the cat at all. It gets a little warm after 10-15 minutes of use, but that is all most cats can probably stand, and is long enough to finish one clipping. Especially with the comb / blade guard on, I don't worry about the cat getting burned by the clipper. We have clipped our cat about 4 times now, getting him a little shorter each time, and the clipper still works well. It has a long cord and the case is roomy and pretty sturdy. It comes with instructions for a "poodle cut" on a dog. Andis seems to be a really good brand, and takes a universal style of blade if you want a different blade someday or need a replacement blade. I haven't checked yet, but I assume a good quality blade can be sharpened as well? Replacement blades were only about $15. I paid $73.99 after a $10 rebate, and that was by far the best price I found. Most prices for this clipper or very similar ones of the same brand were over $100. My vet told me to be sure to buy a good brand - "don't go spend $20". I'm glad I got this advice. In summary, a nice quiet clipper that seems to run well, at a great price! Very glad I bought it; just remember I'm not a pro so I don't have much to compare it to.

Best of FIVE we tried - the only one that worked on our Himalayan,

Animals vary greatly in temperment so if you can borrow a friends clipper to try on your animal first I recommend it before making the investment. We have two cats so this clipper more or less paid for itself the first year in use.
We tried my sister's animal clipper the first year. The second year we tried two from Target and one from Petsmart. Wahl, Conair, Oster, some meant for pets, some for human hair. Finally bit the bullet and got this one from Petsmart. Pricier than the first we bought from them but worth it. (They were kind enough to let us return the first one) In hindsight, if we had the option of buying the clipper only we would have as we don't need all the combs, and if you don't need the extras you can get the clipper by itself for a lot less. The black plastic molded case ours came with is very convenient, however. There are several "models" of this on Amazon, the only difference being the accessories included. Be careful when buying this clipper - the actual model of the clipper is MBG2 and it comes with a #10 blade. THERE ARE TWO ANDIS "PET PRO" CLIPPERS and the other one (The body is shorter, without the swoopy curve on the handle) doesn't get very good reviews. Himalayan cats are like Persians and have massive amounts of extremely fine hair. The other clippers we tried bogged down immediately and got very hot. This blazes through and is also quieter and cooler than the other ones which is good since our Siamese is jumpy. In terms of cat-trimming technique, we first trim all the nails (just in case) then sit on a chair on our deck, with a towel in our lap. Cat in lap on towel, pet for a few minutes until they purr, then start clipping. It helps to keep some tension on their skin with the other hand. Imagine you are petting with your left hand to your left, and the clipper is in your right hand moving to your right. My ratings: 1 star: Avoid! / 2 stars: Some merit but I can't recommend / 3 stars: Decent, nice / 4 stars: Recommended / 5 stars: Nearly perfect! If you found this review helpful, please let me know!

Finally a clipper that works on a Maine Coon,

If you are looking to shave your animal to save on their stress as well as your wallet, this is for you. However, it's not as do it yourself as you think but Andis makes it easy. I called them and spoke to their customer service about my cat (a long very fine hair Maine Coon with a nasty disposition). I told them that I had purchased a Wahl and an Oster that were absolutely awful although in their defense they were cheap, less than [...]. I decided to get a very expensive 2 speed clipper (about [...]) when the customer service rep told me that I didn't need it and to get the Pro Pet kit. She also said the blade size was very important, 10 was good for fine cat fur, a 7 for matted fur. In talking to her, I learned that you have to do this right. You have to oil the blades, religiously. You have to clean them. You have to trim your animal properly (following their instructions). Most importantly, you have to get the proper blade for your animals' fur. Lastly, the Pro Pet kit is for occassional use, not constant use. Don't spend more than 30 mins (really that's too long) on your cat. Keep the blade cool (I keep a soft gel pack) and oiled. Once you get some practice, you can really take the fur off. Plenty of Youtube video to watch to help you. These clippers take the fur off like a hot knife through butter. Happy Clipping!

I've only used this once on my Bichon. It is too hot in New Orleans, and I needed to get rid of some of his long fur. I like grooming him myself and playing with him in the bathtub with his toys. He has never been professionally groomed. This pet clipper was amazingly easy, and even with a Bichon, it only took me about 20 minutes to get him looking like I had spent $75.00 on a professional groomer.

Worked on my Labradoodle~THICK curly fur!!,

I got these clippers the shave my Labradoodle and American eskimo,as well as my long hair cat.
This is the only thing that worked on the Labradoodle. Labradoodles are HARD to groom. First Wash, brush and cut down the fur w/scissors. Then shave away! As far as mats,or clumps of fur go,cut them down as well and hold the shaver almost Vertical and they will come off. I read other reviews that said they got hot. I used mine for about 35 min,and it did get warm, but not hot. I got them for only $36 plus shipping from ebay...(and ebay does have more!) I have tried MANY clippers and these are by far the BEST and lowest price.

Good value purchase,
I considered purchasing a higher end Andis clipper set, but settled on this one. I've only used them once, but they cut really well. I used the clippers to groom my Maltese, which has really thin hair. The cheaper clippers just won't cut that fine hair. These did a great job, but the blade does get pretty hot. I would recommend using guards for your pets.

Clips well, but hot hot HOT blades!,

My old Andis clippers (MC-2 model) finally gave out after approx 7 years of clipping two medium sized dogs on a monthly basis (which is a total lifespan of only 168 groomings). I replaced the old clippers with the more expensive Pro Pet model, and it has good points and bad.On the good side, they run quietly, are well constructed, clip okay (not great), and are easy to handle (although at times the heavy power cord is counterproductive... but I sure wouldn't trade it for a flimsy one). On the bad side, the biggest problem is that the blades get super hot... the main unit itself is just fine, but the metal cutting blades get ultra hot real fast. Of course, the blades are the part that makes contact with the dogs, so it's a big problem. Ever try to trim a face, ears, or paws with red hot blades? Not pretty. I've resorted to keeping a cold drink by me when grooming, so I can steal an ice cube every now and then to cool the blades down for the dogs. Ridiculous! Even if hot blades weren't an issue, my old clippers were much better for trim work; so while the Pro Pet (arguably) cuts the main body better, they're a step down where precision is desired. The blade combs that come with the unit are inferior also (IMO); and while the storage case is nice, it is bulkier than it needs to be with an ill-designed interior. I'm torn between giving this product a 2- or 3-star rating. I'm going with the latter because it does have redeeming features that are an improvement over my old clippers. However, I think the fact that overall I prefer my old clippers over the Pro Pet says a lot. I'm disappointed, and I'm very concerned about the hot blade issue.

Received the clippers today and put them to work on my very hairy Flat Coated Retriever, Buddy. Comfortable to hold, very quiet in operation, and never got hot. My dog has thick hair and the clippers went through it like butter. Now, if I can only teach Buddy to stand still for an entire session...
