5.0 out of 5 stars Strong tool, good price
I bought this set at Petsmart for $50 for my long-haired rottweiler. Let's get one thing straight here - my rottweiler has THICK hair, about 3 inches long, and she's completely covered in dirt all the time. These clippers cut through her hair (I didn't give her a bath, so they cut through her dusty fir) with no problems at all! I got about 4 good uses out of these, then...

2.0 out of 5 stars not good for an airedale
I recently purchased the clipper--but after arrival discovered it is not designed to use on an Airedale's wire coat...The clipper went through aboout a six inch swatch and wouldn't go through any more. The motor worked okay but it doesn't cut her hair.

I got about 4 good uses out of these, then the blades finally went dull. I searched on the Andis website which is EXTREMELY helpful, they show you a list of blades that fit your clippers and you can buy from them or find a store that sells what you need. The replacement blades are about $16 for the horse/dog type ... I have to admit, I contemplated buying sheep clippers for my dog at one time. The motor runs the same as when I first bought it regardless of all the dirt and hair that has gone through it.

I have to say that even spending $50 on these clippers is a good deal, since taking a dog to get groomed can be $40 or more each time! The kit comes with a ton of clipping guides of all sizes, sheers, clipper lubricant, and brush. It also comes with a video which I never watched, so I can't say if it would be helpful or not.

I definitely recommend this for any size dog!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Clipper for the Right Jobs, May 7, 2007

I really like this clipper. I clip both our Scottie and our Standard Poodle at our home. The clipper works very well on the Scottie with no pre-clipping and great for the finish clip on the Poodle. I pre-clip the poodle with an Oster A-5 loaded with a rough-cut blade. I do not think this Andis clipper would hold up for primary use on a large dense coat. However, most clippers or their blades would struggle without a rough-cut on a heavy coat. I really like the numerous blade attachments and the clipper runs very quiet and free of vibration. It will heat with extended use, but not as quickly as some.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value and quality. Wish I had found this sooner., July 22, 2006

A really nice kit. Great quality, and a great value. I have purchased several of the home kits over the years, and this is the first one I have liked after using it. It has plenty of power, and cuts very well. On matted hair, you'll of course have to use the scissors first, but then the clippers work fine. The assortment of guards is great. A really great value. Good feel to it while cutting, easy control. A really nice item.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL, March 13, 2007
I purchased this set from my local PetSmart to replace the piece-of-junk Oster kit we originally bought. It is just night and day! My Oster was constantly clogging with hair, the screws holding the blades on fell off all the time *DANGEROUS,* it was sooo loud, and it got so hot it almost burnt me!
This Andis never cloggs or quits running mid cut and the blades are much safer. My cocker spaniel tangles VERY easily and this clipper even went through some of the knots! It's very quiet and it doesn't get very warm at all. It was almost FUN to clip the dogs for once! This is a GREAT set of clippers for the price!

4.0 out of 5 stars Success on an Australian Shepherd, December 16, 2006

We have an Aussie/Healer mix (we think...she was a foundling) with a thick, soft coat. I've had her professionally groomed once a year for about 7 years at $60 to $75 a pop so last summer I decided to try it myself with this clipper kit. To make a long story short, she didn't turn out so bad! (Well, the neighbors didn't laugh, anyway!) It took me a while to get the hang of it--I finally chucked the various combs and went with the bare clippers--but she didn't complain and I had a "cool" dog for much less $$$ than a pro cut. The best part was I could keep her trimmed all summer as her heavy coat grew back. No report as yet how long the blades last, but I'm already money ahead even if I must replace them next year.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for some dogs, February 11, 2008

I imagine this clipper is good for many dogs-wirehairs or others. But our fine-coated English Setters proved too much of a challenge for it. It would bind very quickly on a just washed and dried dog. Seems the teeth are too far apart and the fur bunches up quickly. I had to return to the $20.00 Oster I got from K-mart, which did a better job on their thick and fine textured fur.

This review is from: Andis 23585 Super Deluxe Pet Clipper Kit with DVD (Health and Beauty)
My maltese needs to be groomed about once a month to keep a clean look and avoid the long nappy mess he turns into. At about $60 a pop for professional grooming I figured even if I got through one at home it would save money. I'm very happy with the performance of these clippers. I've never groomed a dog before but I watched the DVD and got to work on the big mop that was my dog. The motor is nice and quiet so he was comfortable and it was powerful enough to get the job done. It did take many passes to work down to the length I wanted, it wouldn't just power through his coat. That's probably best at my skill level anyway since it gave me time to see the end result taking shape. Definitely going to save a ton of money in the long run so I would recommend these for anyone with a small dog requiring frequent grooming.

I was able to groom my toy poodle. The clippers were wonderful and he looks like a prince. The clippers are not noisey and work very, very well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy unless you have a poodle, and maybe not even then, October 29, 2010
This review is from: Andis 23585 Super Deluxe Pet Clipper Kit with DVD (Health and Beauty)
These clippers are basically junk. I bought them to trim a spot on my cat and all they did was comb through, cutting only a hair or two. So I tried it on a spot on my dog's leg. Same thing. Both animals have medium length, medium thick straight hair. I called the company, Andis, and talked to a customer service rep and was told that these clippers only work on wire or curly haired dogs and that I would need to upgrade to another clipper that cost three times the price. The picture on the package is of a collie type dog, with long thick staight hair. Completely falsely advertised. She did give me the option of returning them to the store and trying another of the same, or she said I could pay to ship the return to the company for an exchange. Like I want to spend more money on something that doesn't work. The customer service rep also told me that this particular clipper is manufactured for them in China and the expensive clippers she wanted me to buy, and are apparently the only ones they stand behind, are manufactured in Wisconsin. Why put their brand name on something that is obviously substandard and misrepresented? Even if I do upgrade to an expensive clipper, it won't be with this company.
