I went to grooming school well over 10yrs ago and started with a nice pair of Oster clippers. I had difficulty getting through thick coated dogs and switched to the Andis A2 model. The difference was night and day! I still have that original pair of Andis clippers for home use and use the newer model at a local shelter.
Some tips-
Blades will get hotter on the 2nd/faster setting (they are rubbing back and forth very quickly--they are going to get hot people--no matter what--any blades that move fast enough to slip smoothly through a thick dog's coat will have the same problem). The trick is to have at least 2 sets of blades and cooling spray. Remember to oil your blades and while grooming use the cooling spray--when they get too warm switch them out for the other blade and keep rotating. It's worth the money-it'll save you a lot of time and your dog some grief. Also--clean hair is MUCH easier for clippers to go through. Extra dirt and oils in the hair will slow you down a lot and make the clippers heat up much faster--so bath your dog (scrub down to the skin on those thick coated breeds) and then blow him/her dry or at least let thoroughly air dry. T-h-o-r-o-u-g-h-l-y dry.
Hope this helps!

We bought these clippers to trim our long haired German Shepherd Dog. She had a very thick under coat. The clippers worked great. I had no previous training using clippers, so I was a bit nervous about accidentally cutting her. That was never a problem at all. The clippers took a bit of practice to get used to, but once I got the feel of it I was confident. I bought a #7 blade and that's what we used for her heavy coat. I also bought a can of the Andis Cool Care Plus spray. The blade does get hot while clipping, the spray helped to cool it down so we could continue in one session.

The amazing thing about these clippers is that they seem so solidly built. They are not very noisy at all. Actually, my husband and I laugh because these animal clippers are much better than the "human" ones they use on him when he gets a haircut. :)

I have two Golden Doodles. They have the thickest, fastest growing, and in general, most difficult to groom fur of any dog I've ever seen. I run this model Andis on high speed only and it does have the power to do the job. However, as others have mentioned, the blades heat up rather quickly. I use the cool spray frequently which helps. You just have to keep track of the temp at regular intervals by touching the blade on your own skin and, when necessary, spray it and let it cool for a minute or so. It gets to be a habit and isn't as much of a bother as it would at first seem. I guess you get use to just about anything. I would give the clippers 5 stars were it not for the heat problem since they are fairly quiet, powerful, and it's fast and easy to swap blades and clean. What I really need though are sheep shears!

I purchased this grooming tool at the advice by several professional groomers. I was debating between the Andis and Oster...and was told that the Oster was cheaply made (not high quality like the brand used to be) and began breaking due to the cheap plastic that it was made of. Although the Andis is slightly more expensive, I decided to follow their expert recommendation. I am certainly glad I did.

The motor is very quiet compared to the old Oster clippers I had (which, you got it, had begun to break...plastic casing). I love the detachable blades because I clip 2 of my dogs, with different type coats, so I need the option to be able to "quickly" change blades. I also had purchased the attachment combs, but don't like them for the clipping I do. Therefore, I bought additional blades made for specific length coats.

The casing of the unit doesn't get hot at all. I am able to trim both of my dogs without having to take a break to let the unit cool. I trim a Norfolk Terrier, using a 3-1/2 blade (longest blade you can get) and it leaves enough coat on him so he doesn't look scalped yet it is evened out so he doesn't look like a wild wolf. My other dog is an Affenpinscher/Min. Schnauzer mix, so I trim her more like the Min. Schnauzer...using the 10 blade around the muzzle and ears, and for her body I use either the 7 blade in summer or the 5-3/4 blade in winter.

I highly recommend this trimmer. I originally purchased it at a nationally known pet supplies store, on sale. However, I found the price at Amazon.com to be $60 less than the store sale price, so I returned those (new and unused, still in the box of course!!!) and ordered through Amazon.com. You'll be totally amazed at how quiet the motor is...quiet enough that my dogs aren't bothered by it at all.

Kept seeing bears on our game cameras, about 200 yards from the house, so we decided to get a Great Pyrenees for protection. Then, we found Mountain Lion tracks 200 yards the other direction .... Pyrenees work best in teams, so we got 2 more. When it turned 90+ degrees this spring, almost a month early, I saw the folly of not being ready to clip those poor dogs. We have 2 Chow/Collie mixes for close-in protection, and an Aussie Shepherd for livestock "crowd control". THAT IS 6 BIG DOGS, FOLKS.
I read the reviews and settled on this clipper, and an extra #7FC blade. It arrived at 11:30 AM in the mail, and we,( 3 of us, one clipping and two restraining and positioning) had all the dogs clipped, with the 7FC blade, by 2:30 PM...... PROBABLY 4-6 GROCERY BAGS OF HAIR !!!!!
They don't look pretty, yet....... we will come back with the #10 blade and clean up their legs and faces and bellies. then we will work some of the felt on their backs and sides better with the #7FC..... that blade leaves the perfect amount of hair for sunburn protection. BUT, THEY SURE ARE HAPPY.....AFTER THE FIRST SQUARE FOOT OF HAIR WAS REMOVED, THEY SETTLED RIGHT IN...... THE CLIPPERS ARE SO QUIET THAT WE COULD CLIP IN AND AROUND THEIR EARS AND EYES WITH ZERO FLINCHING AND TRAUMA.

ADDITIONAL INFO: We used the #10 blade on the second day....nice for the head, legs, and belly....BUT....it DOES heat up faster than the #7, and the dogs get grumpy when the hot blade hits their ears !! The #10 will take more consideration in the cooling down department. As easy as the blades are to change....I can see swapping a hot one for a cool one if extensive use is needed

HERE ARE SOME "TIPS".
Remember to concentrate on keeping the heel of the blade lowered....
