Very few wrestlers have ever captured worldwide fame as Andre The Giant. He was a loving man as large as a mountain yet as gentle as a pussycat. He was a popular attraction and was on the road constantly never wearing out his welcome in one arena. The fans loved him due to his kind and gentle manner. Even though wrestling was 99% percent entertainment he would take great pains not to hurt anybody yet be convincing. Andre suffered from acromegaly a disease of the pituitary gland causing unstoppable growth. He knew about his mortality and it did not stop him from living his life as large as his body. He would eat over a dozen steaks, lobsters, and finish off with wine. He was told he would not live past 40 yet the will to live kept him going. Sadly the illness he was afflicted with began to take a foothold. The immense weight of his skeletal system began to cause painful complications. In a match he broke his leg yet the injury took place when he got out of bed. The disease began to compress his spine causing paralyzing pain and his knees ached as well. Back surgery was an option and it did little to help him. After being pinned by Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania 3 Andre's condition grew so bad he could hardly move. The slightest movement caused unimaginable agony. After the loss of his father, he went home to France to attend the funeral. Andre passed away from congestive heart failure at age 46. Wrestling has never been the same without the big guy who lived his life the way we all should. He lived it large!Andre the Giant (Wrestling Greats)
