Previn as pianist rather than conductor,
By Joanna Daneman (Middletown, DE USA) - See all my reviews (TOP 10 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (COMMUNITY FORUM 04) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Andre Previn: Great Pianists Of The 20th Century (Music Of Mozart, Poulenc, Shostakovich, Gershwin) (Audio CD)
I got this cd on the recommendation of a "real" pianist because of the Poulenc Trois Pieces. They are really stunning. And the Concerto in F, that mysterious-sounding work by Gershwin never sounded better to me. The jazz Gershwin (Embraceable You, etc) are Previn's and not Gershwin's own arrangements. Previn shines in 20th Century music. I wish there were more on this cd set. The entire Great Pianists Series is pretty wonderful; I have the Andre Watts and it is also terrific. |
