Editorial Reviews

Review

"For a medical student or resident, Cecil Essentials is an easier read that provides the 'core essentials' at a more reasonable price and lighter weight. It can actually be read in its entirety during a hectic 12-week clinical rotation." - JAMA, review of a previous edition

What this book does is give you a solid foundation about the pathophysiology associated with diseases. What it DOESN'T do if give you necessary clinical information required for boards, shelf exams, and clinical practice. For example, the sections on COPD and asthma: it does not discuss the different stages of severity of the diseases or what the guidelines recommend on treating the different stages. It's essential to know the difference between mild-intermittant asthma vs moderate-continuous asthma because different treatments go with it. It does not even discuss the stepwise approach to adding new medications to asthma patients.

This same pattern holds true throughout the text. It gives a good summary over pathophysiology, but does not go into clinical detail about classifying or treatment diseases, which is necessary for any medical student, resident, or practitioner.

Great comprehensive internal medicine book!
This is the first internal medicine book that I have actually committed to reading.

The best part about this book is that it's readable. I made it through step 2 ck and almost all my rotations using small 'review books' and I was relying on memorization; however, with this book you get a concise yet comprehensive review by organ system that gives you an understanding, such that you come away knowing the material without the memorization.

I wish I had read this book earlier in my academic career. It's a great book that can be used for review or to follow along during rotations. If you want quick facts, get a Washington Manual. If you want an in-depth understanding that lasts, get Cecil's.

This is a great book just bummed that it was not available in hardcover. Because it is heavy and the rim breaks and the pages fall out :<

This book was really well written and provides great background for understanding various diseases. However, like some of the other reviewers commented, it does not provide the step by step details needed for clinical use.

Great for 2nd/3rd year medical school. It is written very clearly, with clinical and evidence based medicine perspective on everything. It still goes over some of the basic sciences and pathology involved. Strongly recommend it for systems based medical school programs or 3rd year medicine clerkship.

I was required to use this book for my respiratory pathophysiology module. This book could have used some more proofreading and slightly better organization of information for more efficient learning. Now, I won't claim to be the best at respiratory physiology, but here are two example errors: the book states that emphysema, due to destruction of the lung's ability to elastically recoil, *decreases compliance.* By definition, a decrease in elasticity is an increase in compliance as the properties have reciprocal relationship. Second, the authors stated that a normal A-aDO2 gradient is 20 mmHg. That's just not true - according to most sources normal for anyone at under age 30 is <10 mmHg, and above that the normal value can roughly be estimated as age * 0.3. Based off of that rough estimation, you'd have to be over 66 years old in order for an A-aDO2 of 20 mmHg to be considered normal! In both these examples, compliance and A-aDO2 are fundamental concepts, and to err on such things is very worrisome, because it makes me have to spend time to double check a lot of what this book says, making me doubt the reliability of the information presented by the authors.

As an intern in IM I have enjoyed this book. It goes back to the basics, long forgotten, and melds it with the complexity of residency. Very recommended. Good as review material in addition to MKSAP16 and similar Qbanks.

Plenty of clinical information that will help me on rounds! It's a nice reference for the Fundamentals of Clinical Medicine class. It explains concepts that weren't covered well in class.
