Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up-This book details the life of the colorful, rough-and-tumble frontiersman from his birth in 1767 to his death in 1845. Jackson was a Revolutionary War veteran at the age of 15 and accomplished many things, including serving as president for two terms. Whitelaw's text is well written and accessible for even reluctant readers of history. Average-quality, black-and-white reproductions appear throughout. Report writers will be interested in the many firsts that Jackson scored as president. The author also discusses his harsh treatment of Native Americans and the fact that he was the only president to pay off the national debt. A well-documented and readable addition.-Barbara Jo McKee, Streetsboro Senior High, OH

From Booklist

Gr. 7-10. Despite tragic beginnings (he was fatherless from birth, and left without family by the age of 15), Jackson became a stalwart, determined idealist, believing he could achieve whatever he wanted regardless of his poverty and lack of education. That determination made him a great soldier and a shrewd if myopic political negotiator. It also steeped him in scandal his entire life: he had an adulterous affair with Rachel Robards, and his penchant for fighting and dueling left him near death many times before being elected president. His condescending treatment of Native Americans makes him seem entirely reprehensible today, yet his meager beginnings endeared him to many frontier dwellers, and his shrewd handling of money cleared the national debt. He is also given credit for being the first president to insist that the federal government be the servant of the people. In Whitelaw's finely written, information-packed book, Jackson comes across as complicated, admirable, and unbearable --but always fascinating. Roger Leslie
