Book Description

The Oxford Poetry Library June 2, 1994
Andrew Marvell lived through some of the most momentous events in English history, but his poetry is detached and private, mostly lyrical, strikingly original in its combining of existing traditions, and seemingly untouched for the most part by what was happening around him. He traveled on the continent, worked for the government of Oliver Cromwell, and later acted as a Member of Parliament for Hull after the Restoration of Charles II.
This new selection of Marvell's verse, fully annotated for the student and general reader, includes the political and satiric verses for which he was primarily remembered in the century after his death, but accords pride of place to Marvel's finest achievement--his marvelous lyric poetry.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Wonderful: affordable, accessible text. Gently modernized and helpfully but not excessively annotated. The prose is a particular asset."--Richard Duerden, Brigham Young University

"Finally! The poems and The Rehearsal Transpros'd in one edition!"--Phoebe S. Spinrad, Ohio State University

"A good, clear edition, affordably priced."--Robert Watson, UCLA

"The modern spelling and updated explanatory notes...are the major contributions of this edition, which maintains the high standard of the 'Oxford Authors' series. Recommended."--Choice

From the Publisher

Founded in 1906 by J.M. Dent, the Everyman Library has always tried to make the best books ever written available to the greatest number of people at the lowest possible price. Unique editorial features that help Everyman Paperback Classics stand out from the crowd include: a leading scholar or literary critic's introduction to the text, a biography of the author, a chronology of her or his life and times, a historical selection of criticism, and a concise plot summary. All books published since 1993 have also been completely restyled: all type has been reset, to offer a clarity and ease of reading unique among editions of the classics; a vibrant, full-color cover design now complements these great texts with beautiful contemporary works of art. But the best feature must be Everyman's uniquely low price. Each Everyman title offers these extensive materials at a price that competes with the most inexpensive editions on the market-but Everyman Paperbacks have durable binding, quality paper, and the highest editorial and scholarly standards. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent Collection in Flimsy Paperback, October 28, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this collection for a class in which I wrote a paper discussing "Upon Appleton House" and a few of his other poems. Although this was cheap, the paperback is so thin it is more of a pamphlet, and you are probably better off just sourcing these poems from other anthologies, the internet, or even by making photocopies at the library. I can never find this in my bookshelf when I want to, and it is not comprehensive enough of a poetry collection to warrant purchasing it for academic use.
