5.0 out of 5 stars Burke finally shared his collection!, January 20, 2000
By
Andrew Vachss devotees know that Burke loves the way Judy Henske sings the blues.

Unfortunately, until recently, none of her music was available in print, and was very hard to find even in out-of-print stores.

I ordered two copies of the Safe House CD when I ordered the book, when it first came out in hardcover. (I knew that my brother, for whom I'd bought the book, would want a CD as well.) Having been a metalhead in the 80s and a lover of "alternative" music during the 90s, I bought the CD out of sheer curiosity about Judy and not because of any love of the Blues.

This CD totally entranced me, from the first time I listened to it. When I had a soundcard on my computer at work, I would listen to the entire CD from beginning to end every day without getting tired of it. It's like nothing I had ever experienced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let the rain fall while this CD is playing, May 7, 1999
This review is from: Andrew Vachss Safe House: A Collection of the Blues (Audio CD)
I cannot get over this wonderful collection of the blues. I will put it on with the intention of getting something done while listening to it, but time and again, I find myself sitting on my couch, staring out the window as the music encases me. A wonderful CD to hold a mood, or just create one on its own account. A real must have.

If you are an Andrew Vachss fan, you'll love this CD. I especially like Another Man's Woman by Marcia Ball. This is a "Must Have" album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Blues Primer CD, May 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Andrew Vachss Safe House: A Collection of the Blues (Audio CD)
The CD *is* as billed- great blues; not processed, not tidied, the truth. Compilations can be tricky but this one is lovely, of a piece though with the diversity you hope for in a compilation. I've often put together interesting reading lists and lists of music to listen to from what authors mention in their novels... these are some blues which novelist Andrew Vachss likes (marvelous reads when you're ready for serious darkness, grit and fun). The only thing that's no darn fun is you're gonna love Judy Henske but where to get other recordings with her?!

5.0 out of 5 stars PERFECT!, September 26, 2002

This review is from: Andrew Vachss Safe House: A Collection of the Blues (Audio CD)
The first time I read a Burke novel, I just knew he had the range and the pain for the Blues. Every time I read one of Vachss' books I found myself hearing the songs. This is the perfect accompaniment to every one of Vachss' heart-wrenching, redeeming, and true books.

And for those of you trying to get your friends to listen to the Blues or read a Burke novel, just tell them to listen to this CD. You can't go wrong with Son Seals, Katie Webster, Marcia Ball, Judy Henske, or any of the other TRUE blues artists that Vachss gives play to here.

The perfect compilation Blues CD!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Andrew Vachss Safe House: A Collection of the Blues (Audio CD)
I bought this album because of Mr. Vachss and his Burke books. I was curious about what he likes and also wanted to contribute for the kids. Not only does he write great books, but he knows his BLUES. This collection is wonderful! I have ordered Judy Henske's new album. For diehard fans of this, try another hard to find guy named Mickey Newbury. His NIGHTS WHEN I AM SANE is a classic and available on Amazon , or it was previously. No promises. In the meantime, Mr. Vachss, please do this again!!!!!! We trust you to take care of us with your choices.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CD full of Blues, August 18, 2000
This review is from: Andrew Vachss Safe House: A Collection of the Blues (Audio CD)
This CD has been my first true exposure to the blues outside of the Blues Brothers and BluesFest in Chicago. Although Judy Henske is my favorite artist on the CD, and she sings as described in all Burke novels, I have learned to enjoy Howling Wolf and Son Seals and all of the others. I have given this CD to a few family members who introduced me to Vachss. I am also glad that Andrew Vachss was able to collect a large time span of the blues from the 1930's (?) to now. Thank Vachss for bring Burke to life and showing us the hardcore blues

5.0 out of 5 stars Incendiary!, August 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Andrew Vachss Safe House: A Collection of the Blues (Audio CD)
This is the perfect blues sampler. Not a softcore cut in the lot. When you read a novel, especially with a continuing series character, you never know how much of the writer is on the page. Burke loves the blues, and now its clear where that comes from.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, August 2, 1999

This review is from: Andrew Vachss Safe House: A Collection of the Blues (Audio CD)
When I found that there was a collection of the music Burke listens to, I simply had to have it. I am delighted with the CD. It is a rich and varied experience, introducing me to the work of some, and reintroducing me to the work of old friends. I recommend the CD highly. It has gone beyond enriching my experience of Vachss's novels, to enriching my own life. Thank you.
