Editorial Reviews

Review

“Crandall gets at the heart of Andrew W.K. better than any other previous writer. You'll know this much after reading the first few pages of his book. What you'll have to ponder after you've finished reading is the way in which Andrew connects the dots among I Get Wet, Daydream Nation, Appetite for Destruction, Dr. Feelgood, OK Computer, Slippery When Wet, Loveless...” ―Paul Gleason, Caught in the Carousel

“Phillip Crandall's book about Andrew WK's I Get Wet has been one of my favourites from this wonderful series of books. Fans will love it, sure. But if you're like me, if you didn't quite get the fuss first time around, you'll not only find a funny, sad, fascinating story, you'll find great heart-on-(record)-sleeve writing.” ―Simon Sweetman, Blog On The Tracks

As any reader of the 33 1/3 series already knows - these books run gauntlet from excellent (Low, Loveless, Village Green Preservation Society, Reign In Blood, Zaireeka) to dreadful (OK Computer, Use Your Illusion, 69 Love Songs, Pretty Hate Machine) to everything in between (In Utero, Harvest, Highway 61 Revisited, Born In the USA, Achtung Baby). I was both excited and a little nervous when I heard there was going to be a 33 1/3 book on I Get Wet. Luckily, Phillip Crandall did an excellent job on this book. Keeping his personal stories to a minimum and focusing on the story, recording and art that is I Get Wet, he makes a fascinating read about the history of Andrew W.K. and the I Get Wet album. As an added bonus, he devotes a whole chapter to the Steev Mike phenomena. Well written and wonderfully researched (I think he did a good 50 interviews for all the insider information!). Highly recommended for fans of Andrew W.K. or anyone who loves a good music book! Quick read... LONG LIVE THE PARTY!

The 33 1/3 series has a long history of quality breakdowns of classic albums but this is easily one of the best in the series. Crandall takes an album that seems simple on its surface and explodes it to reveal the labyrinthine layers underneath through interviews with all its participants and an extremely open and communicative Andrew W.K. I consider 'I Get Wet' one of the most carefully crafted and executed albums of all time so I'm extremely pleased there a book that does it proper justice through thoughtful examination AND revealed even more things for me to appreciate in W.K. as an artists on multiple levels. - Jim Kopeny / Tankboy

I didn't want to leave my review until I fully finished and processed what I read. I was an Andrew WK fan before I read, but after reading I'm even more inspired and in love! This book really gets into the details of Andrew as a person and how the infamous "I Get Wet" record came to be. Reading about the songs got me so pumped to put the book down and crank the volume all the way up to listen again! The songs on "I Get Wet" make me feel like no other songs can. A deep joy that just bubbles inside and gets you excited to be alive. I got that same joy from reading this amazing book. I had so many favorite passages, but one of my favorite AWK quotes is "I want to create a feeling that's inspiring to people versus impress people." Well, Andrew you inspire and impress me. And Phillip, thank you for writing this book, it is now one of my all time favorites. PARTY HARD FOREVER.

Haven taking a few courses in musicology, I am admittedly something of an amateur. However, Crandall's examination of Andrew W.K.'s seminal "I Get Wet" album is an in-depth examination of the man, his music, and the scene which inspired him. It is very well-researched, and touches on some of the insanity, paradoxes, rumors, and legend of Mr. Wilkes-Krier.

Being a big fan of Andrew W.K., I was anxious to read a bit more about him. Now I will have to keep my eyes open for other books in this series about artists I enjoy.

Phil Crandall's book on Andrew W.K.'s I Get Wet is a wonderful exploration of an artist and his unique place in the world. Admittedly I cannot count myself among the musical enthusiasts and experts that likely make the majority of the regular readership of this series. However l love biographies and journalistic accounts of unique individuals especially those that live on the fringe or make up some small community of eccentric strangers. For me this book sheds light on a movement of music and people out of small town Michigan that I certainly never knew existed, yet the author makes them sound (no pun...well yeah intended) familiar and detailed even showing the microscopic yet meaningful counter-counterculture.

I ripped through this is one sitting. I laughed aloud several times, most often with some of the details of AWK's antics. (The apt fire is a favorite) And the book is worth it for those fantastically small moments alone. The key with them is the well paced set-up and drops which handled by others would not have the same punch. Laughs aside, the real coup is the revelation of Andrew WK himself. I learned a lot from the book about his art. And as a person who shamefully only knew AWK by his MTV video and SNL appearance (in the book) I might be inclined to be like his many critics - boxing him in as "bubble-gum metal". This book has made me change my entire perspective of what may be a musical and performance genius. Its a cliche (but one with a point) but I was judging his book by his cover - which is ironic because... look at that cover. So great.

I now picture a shy, dizzy kid growing up spreading an important 5-letter message ("P-A-R-T-Y") of eagerness for life and inclusion, which feels like the point Phil Crandall was making. If so point taken.

Never heard of the 33 1/3 series before this edition. At first I thought: how is it possible to write an entire book on a 10 year old album which focuses on partying and puking? And why would anyone want to sit down and read it in lieu of partying? I was gladly proven wrong because reading this book and learning about the man behind the party was one of the partiest mental parties I've experienced.
