5.0 out of 5 stars What books should be., October 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Android in Practice (Paperback)
"Android in Practice" is everything an experienced developer needs to develop first class applications for the Android platform. While not an omnibus tour, it includes everything a developer needs, including the OS tasking and networking models, UI, and storage.

Perhaps just as importantly, for honest-to-FSM professional developers it includes good coverage of setting up a build and test environment that will work with your pre-existing CI process.

"Hello, Android" is great if you don't know what you are doing. If you are a professional software developer, this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars I never bother with reviews, November 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Android in Practice (Paperback)
I am so thrilled to have purchased this book that I broke my own lazy rule about not writing reviews.

This is well written, the code is so beautifully annotated, the examples practical and not simplistic.

I have a stack of useless books in this genre that are no better than what I could find in a 5 minute search on the web.

This book is worth every penny. Thank you authors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Android development, December 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Android in Practice (Paperback)
I got started with the O'Reilly book, but half way through I realized it was not cohesive and needed to try something else.
Android in Practice is an excellent book, especially if you already know Java.
Still not totally perfect, but I guess it is hard to be complete in less than a few thousand pages - I will probably read Pro Android and waiting for Head First Android, just to fill in some of the gaps.
One thing I would have liked would be an index of API's - the book policy is to send you to the Android site for those, since they frequently change - but still, I think it would have been better if the book presented some common widgets with additional options in a table format in an appendix.
