Editorial Reviews

RUNAWAY TOTEM manages to successfully reach the quintessence of the art of MAGMA, and still add numerous elements inherited from Progressive rock or new musics. If we add that a parallel line-up also exist under the name UNIVERSAL TOTEM ÖRCHESTRÄ, and that one of their tracks is called "Mekänik Ritüäl", we can imagine the influence MAGMA exerted on those Italian musicians ! With their chanted vocals, roaring bass, female choirs… No doubt about it, it is definitely Zeuhl ! "Andromeda" could very well have been a new album by DEVIL DOLL or DEUS EX-MACHINA, if not for the dark side included in the music performed here. The six ambitious tracks featured on the fourth album "Tep Zepi" (2003) remind of MAGMA, of course, but also of KING CRIMSON and even of the modern Gothic school, due to the presence of atmospheres linked to the sacred. The ambiences are often dark, full of spleen, and even satanic. The vocals strongly remind of opera music. The synthesizer layers and the organ parts also contribute to the creation of fascinating and dreamy atmospheres. Here is a highly recommended totem !

I have only recently discovered the breadth and depth of the Zeuhl genre via last dot fm. I found that I liked Runaway Totem a lot and subsequently purchased this album. I enjoyed Andromeda on first listening and my appreciation for it has grown with additional listenings.

Although I don't understand the lyrics (Kabaian? - they don't sound Italian), to me the album seems to tell a story - a science-fiction story involving variations on undefined but presumably fairly stock sci-fi themes. In an abstract way, the music seems to carry the listener through the stages of a good story - introducing characters, setting the scene, helping the reader/listener gain familiarity with a strange world; bringing in challenge, conflict, and danger; pulling off a few unexpected plot twists; and finally, bringing a resolution that is satisfying, although not necessarily of the "happily ever after" variety.

I find none of the sounds on this album to be boring, and there are choice moments in most of the songs - the kinds of delightful sequences and layerings of sounds that one listens for in eager anticipation and that thrill the consciousness when encountered. There's enough compositional goodness and tight execution to maintain one's interest for weeks or months, so you'll probably get your entertainment dollars' worth if you download the album.
