4.0 out of 5 stars Sick, Twisted...and One-Of-a-Kind, December 17, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Andy Dick & The Bitches of the Century (Audio CD)
Andy Dick is one of the funniest men in America. After appearing in countless films and TV shows, he has become a household name. However, the masses that chuckled at his exploits on News Radio will probably not warm to this often abrasive collection of songs.

With song titles like "C*** & Balls" and "Little Brown Ring" and a prominently-displayed "Parental Advisory" warning, it doesn't take a genius to surmise that Dick's recording will likely offer copious doses of scatological humor. Be warned: A great deal of the material here is indeed filthy, but it's also very funny. And the musicianship is excellent! The songs are so catchy that I caught myself singing about anuses while waiting in a supermarket checkout line.

"Love Ninja (The Stalker Song) kicks the album off, and is one of my favorite recordings of the year. The unreliable first-person perspective is used to glroious effect. As an obnoxious, unhinged man details a short-lived affair and his subsequent revenge, the instruments lurch and pause like a mind on the brink of total madness. The manner in which Dick's So-Cal snarl wraps around phrases like "How 'bout that?" and "Remember that?" will have you both disturbed and convulsing with laughter.

Furthermore, who but Dick could (or would!) write a song about Stephen Hawking, complete with electronic voice and an absurd "Safety Dance" sample? And Dick's well-won take on drug addiction that pervades "Hole Burns" and "30 Days 30 Nights" manages to be poignant as well as hilarious.

Any album with cover art by Marilyn Manson is sure to appeal to only a select group of listeners. If you're even remotely curious, this record was made for you! Order it at once.

5.0 out of 5 stars The REAL Brilliance of Mr. Dick, April 12, 2004

What my fellow reviewers are failing to mention is just how deep the album is--and, no, I'm not being sarcastic.

Most of the songs focus on Dick's very public battles with The Man and his own personal demons. He addresses addiction, psychosis, jail, rehab, and the tolls of each on his personal relationships.

Yes, I agree the clip of "The Safety Dance" in "Stephen Hawking" is brilliant, but the line about how his friends don't come around anymore is even moreso. Even better is the song, "Striped Sunlight," as it is both winsome and full of pathos.

This album proves Andy Dick is more than just an obnoxious flake. He has the stones to admit his problems and, as pretentious as this sounds, bare his soul while laughing at himself. The fact that he can do so while singing about rectums just shows his twisted sense of humor.

(Again, I'm NOT being sarcastic in my praise for this review.)

Morbid, twisted, and a lot of fun. If you don't like his comedy, you'd be a fool to buy this. Andy's a decent musician, a daring comedian, and the Anticrooner. I rate this album 4 stars rightfully, because it delivered just what I expected, and slightly better than I expected. I bought it to listen to once. I've played it four times so far. Good job, Andy.
