Editorial Reviews

2013 archive release from the late comedian. Andy & His Grandmother is material never heard before, a skimming from 82 hours of microcassette tapes that Andy recorded during 1977-79. Andy regarded the microtape recorder as a fantastic new way of capturing his hoaxing, and carried it with him everywhere, for use at any given moment. Real life was the ultimate frontier for him, and these tapes demonstrate the heart of Andy's comedy.

Andy Kaufman was not your typical comic. Instead of writing material and delivering routines, Andy Kaufman's life became the Comedy and this album presents a very entertaining slice of that life.
The premise is simple: Andy Kaufman bought a mini-cassette recorder and, overly excited about this new technology (remember- this is the late '70s), Andy is going to tape every moment of his life and release the more revealing conversations as comedy.
At times, it works. Andy's grandma and a couple girlfriends fall victim to his tape and the results are funny. At times, Andy forces the issue and tries to elicit revealing conversations, and it is painful. But it is real, which ultimately makes it funny in an uncomfortable way.
And for those of you who know Kaufman, making his audience uncomfortable is something he intended and was excellent at doing. Andy records one of his early stand-up routines and from the beginning, it is not funny. The audience is dead silent, and uncomfortable rustling can be heard on the tape. Yet the routine goes on and on and on, almost to the point where you expect the audience to attack Andy. It is hard to listen to, while at the same time, hilarious.
If you are an Andy Kaufman fan, you will love this slightly more revealing portrait of Kaufman's comedy and how it infused his entire life. If you are not a fan, be warned- this is not a typical comedy album. It is a portrait of a true one of a kind artist.

Genius. Mimic. Prankster. Retard. Man Child. Conceptual Artists. Surrealist. Major Alpha Male. Aggressively Annoying Pr**k. DEAD?! Screw it. Such simple name tags that have applied to Andy Kaufman have either burned off or faded away decades ago. Whatever symptoms and reasons that motivated the man and his mania have placed a painful rug burn across pop culture and comedy forever, forcing us to deal with the smell and endlessly talk about. The closest you might come to him without getting burned is Bob Zmuda's 1999 "tell-all" book `Andy Kaufman Revealed'....and this damned CD.

(BTW: I'm not including that Jim Carrey bio to the above paragraph as Hollywood and Andy has had a tempestuous relationship and it seems that the movie was the town's revenge against him)

Simply put, without getting too deep in the hype (which will be a challenge. Thanks, Andy), this CD contains pieces of the vapor trails from his micro-cassette collection he secretly recorded between 1977 and 1979...all 82 hours of it! I'm sure you've heard about the story and the technical details behind this production; Andy's fateful discovery of the micro-cassette technology, his plans for an album out of this mess and how it all landed on someone else's hands three decades after the SOB died. Typical.....

This is a short set, but it's never lesser the level of intensity, hostility and drama Andy is known and feared for:

Hear Andy making surreal demands of hookers, fighting with cab drivers, pitting one (supposed) girlfriend against another, playing animal noises over the phone and so on. Then there's a couple of tracks featuring his grandmother: him telling her of causing a fight in a movie theater (and THEN playing the actual tape of this performance....yea, I said "performance"!

This CD provides a very intimate view of Andy. We may not like everything he did, but he did everything to have fun. At one point, he did seem like a jerk when he instigated hostility between two women he dated just for his own amusement. He was very immature at the time and changed when he met Lynne. Some of it is funny, but it is all Andy. And as a very, very big Andy fan, I am pleased to have this left of him nearly 30 years after his death. His sweetness was there underneath, even though it didn't always show.

I think Andy Kaufman never had a comedy album in his life time because he was a visual performance artist, song and dance man. But his recordings of pranks on the ones closest to him are priceless! Thanks for releasing this!! I was expecting stand up type stuff, but this is better and It's makes sense this is what a Andy Kaufman album would be, something more interesting and out-of-the-box!! ENJOY!

In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since.

"Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."

He didn't say any more, but we've always been unusually communicative in a reserved way, and I understood that he meant a great deal more than that. In consequence, I'm inclined to reserve all judgments, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and also made me the victim of not a few veteran bores. The abnormal mind is quick to detect and attach itself to this quality when it appears in a normal person, and so it came about that in college I was unjustly accused of being a politician, because I was privy to the secret griefs of wild, unknown men. Most of the confidences were unsought-frequently I have feigned sleep, preoccupation, or a hostile levity when I realized by some unmistakable sign that an intimate revelation was quivering on the horizon; for the intimate revelations of young men, or at least the terms in which they express them, are usually plagiaristic and marred by obvious suppressions. Reserving judgments is a matter of infinite hope. I am still a little afraid of missing something if I forget that, as my father snobbishly suggested, and I snobbishly repeat, a sense of the fundamental decencies is parcelled out unequally at birth.

And, after boasting this way of my tolerance, I come to the admission that it has a limit. Conduct may be founded on the hard rock or the wet marshes, but after a certain point I don't care what it's founded on.
