Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

ea. vol: illus. by David Mostyn. 32p. diags. bibliog. glossary. (BMX Bunch Series). CIP. Gareth Stevens. 1988. PLB $8.95. Grade 1-3 These two titles are slight not only in length but also in terms of their predictable plots and weak characterizations. In one, younger sibling Andy tries to make the grade into the BMX Bunch. A convenient accident, with the police happily nearby, aids his cause. In the other, a nervous Greg attempts his first race. Illustrations are colorful cartoon-like drawings in which all of the characters look alike. The appended material is really quite good: diagrams of a bike and necessary gear; bicycle care; safety rules and where to write for safety information; descriptions of some moves and tips for racing; addresses of clubs and magazines; a bibliography of books and video; and a glossary of new words, primarily BMX terms. However, the picture book format, coupled with the cartoon-like illustrations, makes the books more appealing to young readers, while older kids who are apt to be avid racers will shy away from such obviously juvenile stuff.
