5.0 out of 5 stars Hilariously Strange and Funny, December 18, 1999

This review is from: Andy Kaufman Special [VHS] (VHS Tape)
When Andy Kaufman was only known as "latka",this special allowed people to see another side of Andy that they did not know.Shelved for two years by studio executives, they just thought it was far too bizarre to air on television, eventually it did air.

You see Andy's classic "foreign Man to Elvis",He makes chocolate milk and sings kid's songs,he interrogates Cindy Williams (Laverne And Shirley) about her career and ask's her some absurd questions. He also host's his infamous "Has Been Corner"where he shames a woman who once thought she could make it in Hollywood. He also plays the bongos and has some sing-alongs,as well as shows home movies.

It was originally titled: "Andy's Funhouse",because much of the show is a tribute to the children's shows that he put on as a child, only this show has plenty of bizarre things as well. This show was mostly the reason why Andy Kaufman took the job on Taxi. This video along with "Midnight Special",and "I'm From Hollywood" would be the besy way to go,for a great set of Andy Kaufman videos.

Order today! Eric.

5.0 out of 5 stars Andy Kaufman at his best, November 16, 1999
This review is from: Andy Kaufman Special [VHS] (VHS Tape)
When the TV show TAXI was just getting going,Andy was was given the rights to produce his own "special".I've seen many specials by other comedians, but this one stands out as the most original, funny, and off the wall bizarre. It also aired on ABC during TAXI and gave people another side of Andy Kaufman that they had never seen. Andy plays the bongos,"Has Been Corner" where people who are trying to get a new start in showbiz have to deal with Andy telling them "I don't think you'll make it" there's a whole lot more as well.Order it today

4.0 out of 5 stars Are You a True Kaufman Fan?, April 19, 2000
This review is from: Andy Kaufman Special [VHS] (VHS Tape)
If so, then this video is for you, however, I suggest that you make this the second of your video collection. I would first buy the Midnight Special. It has a lot of the same skits as this one, but with Tony Clifton to boot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do Not Adjust Your Television Sets, July 14, 2000

It's the Brilliant Song-and-Dance Man Andy Kaufman doing what he loves to do and doing it better then anyone else ever could. Although much shorter then I'd like, it kept me laughing the whole time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maybe his best work..., July 10, 2000

I think this may be the best of Andy's early work. All of Andy's classic routines when they still were relatively fresh and new (at least to the public). If I had one video to show someone who had never seen Andy, I would choose this one, no dobut. I can't watch it enough.

I first saw this as a tv special right around the time "Man on the Moon" came out. It is by far, the funniest and most brilliant work Andy has done. This video was very hard to come by for a long time so I didn't get to see it again until just a few weeks ago. I still think this one is the best (and I have seen them all). If you are a new Andy Kaufman fan, this is the first video you should see. It has all his best skits and there is never a dull moment.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Conceptual Comedy", August 4, 2005
This review is from: Andy Kaufman Special [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Andy Kaufman accomplished a lot in his 35 years of life, and became very well known as part of the "Taxi" cast. In this 1977 TV Special, his oddball humor is shown in its many facets, some of them working better than others. The funniest sections for me are the introduction, where Andy tells the audience that he went on vacation with the money allotted for the show. There is nothing written, no guests, and no sets except the chair he is sitting on and a lamp with no shade, and we will just have to watch him sit and do nothing. He says all this in the character we know best, "The Foreigner."

The other highlight is his Elvis imitation, which may be one of the best Elvis impersonations anyone has attempted, not in the sense of being "like" the man who was his idol, by as an interpretation of him. Other skits include Uncle Andy the kiddie show host, a conga session (Andy loved conga drums), some home movies from his childhood, a heartwarming scene with Howdy Doody, and with Cindy Williams, Andy is the interviewer from hell. There is also Gail Slobodkin, a young woman who sings in "The Has-Been Corner."
Andy Kaufman (1949-1984) was a very private person, and the mystery about his life added to his unique concept: His comedy was about non-comedy, and played with the audience's mind. Andy's talent survives and still finds interest 20 years after his passing, which says a lot for his "non jokes." Total running time is 51 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, April 14, 2000
This review is from: Andy Kaufman Special [VHS] (VHS Tape)
As someone who is unfortunatly to young to have seen Andy perform {he died when I was 3}, this was a great chance to experience him in action. It contains a few "bits" used in "Man On The Moon" It was awesome to see them being done by Andy {not that Jim Carrey didn't do them great}. It kept me laughing almost the whole way through. If you are like myself, and weren't able to know who Andy Kaufman was until "Man On The Moon", and would like to see him perform, then I highly suggest this awesome and hilarious video.
