Scotland the Brave,
By Alan Breck (Jersey City, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Andy Stewart's Scotland (Audio CD)
I reccomend this late collection of Andy Stewart's studio recordings mainly because none of his early offerings have been issued on CD, and this disc is far superior to the cloying "Andy's Scottish Party." Here Stewart reprises all of his early hits, and adds a few traditional favorites. His voice is old and tired, and the backing sparse- especially when compared to the arrangements of his early albums. Still, this is a good retrospective of one of Scotland's great entertainers.

I first saw Andy Stewart at the World's Fair in New York in 1964. He received a standing ovation from an audience made up mostly of blacks and Puerto Ricans. His appeal was universal. He was the heir to the legacy of Sir Harry Lauder. Some of his music may seem a bit schmaltzy today but I find it very nostalgic.

I really enjoyed this CD. It reminded me of my visits to the theaters in Glasgow and Edinbrough. There is a lot of music on one CD.
