2.0 out of 5 stars Title is deceiving...
Having been in practice for the last 25 years, I have seen a few of the procedures described in this book. (And then some.) Now teaching at the university level, I try to find textbooks that embody what the cover suggests. As for Jaffe's book: the accuracy is fair, but the way in which it is written is rather insulting to the anesthesiologist's intelligence. This book...

2.0 out of 5 stars Title is deceiving..., December 9, 2006
Having been in practice for the last 25 years, I have seen a few of the procedures described in this book. (And then some.) Now teaching at the university level, I try to find textbooks that embody what the cover suggests. As for Jaffe's book: the accuracy is fair, but the way in which it is written is rather insulting to the anesthesiologist's intelligence. This book puts the emphasis on the surgeon's role and viewpoint as being paramount. There is a noticable lack of patient safety and comfort that is considered. This is, after all, why we are there. For documentation of specific surgical protocol, this is a reasonable text. For actual practice, there are better sources of information. Most who have been through residency know the ones I mean. Either change the name to "Surgical Procedures from the Surgeon's Point of View" or add information that would provide insight thus allowing the anesthesia practitioner to tailor their anesthetic to enhance the patient's overall surgical/anesthetic experience.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but, December 10, 2007
It doesn't describe all the procedures accurately, and sometimes the descrption of the procedures doesn`t change my anesthetic plan. I think it was written from a surgery point of view, rather than the anesthesiologist

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy Anesthesiologist, October 22, 2003

This review is from: Anesthesiologist's Manual of Surgical Procedures (Hardcover)
I used this book continuously throughout my residency. It is a very useful tool for perioperative management of patients. I still reference it during practice for those cases that I do not do routinely. It is an excellent reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bulkiness prevents it from being where I need it most, October 26, 2003

This review is from: Anesthesiologist's Manual of Surgical Procedures (Hardcover)
Good book. Its bulkiness prevents it from being available where I need it, in the hospital, in the OR etc..
I guess it could easily be printed in handbook format, or better yet, become available in PDA format. That would make it much more practical in my view.

2.0 out of 5 stars No better than previous edition, July 4, 2009
There was a great deception for me - almost nothing new since previous edition, for example, remifentanyl doesn't existe, no evidence based data for certains anesthetic managements.

if you have a previous edition, it doesn't matter to buy this book

it can be good stuff for a junior anesthesiologist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great asset, March 13, 2010

I'm an SRNA who recently entered residency. I have no experience in the OR, so this book has been worth it's weight in gold for me. It's incredibly helpful in terms of accurately describing the procedure as well as cueing the anesthetist on potential concerns pre, intra, and post procedure. The price is a bit steep, but it's well worth it!!

I've used the 2nd edition of this book, but this edition is an order of magnitude improved. The book is much bigger: it now has over 1500 pages, and the print has color, including color diagrams.

Best of all, you now get online access to the full searchable text, including diagrams. This overcomes one of the criticism of the previous editions that the book is not portable. You can now get full acess at work or print out the pages you're interested in on a color printer and just take that to the OR.

I must say I was blown away by the improvements.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great purchase!, June 18, 2011
I bought this very comprehensive manual based on good experience with an older version that we had in the OR during my clerkship in anesthesia in the USA. Now that I am a resident in a different country, I purchased it knowing it would come in handy; what I didn't know was that my attending would be so enthusiastic about it. When he saw it, he asked to borrow it and after that about 5 other attendings purchased a copy as well.
It's really comprehensive, well written and interesting!
