In recent years our understanding of molecular mechanisms of drug action and interindividual variability in drug response has grown enormously. Meanwhile, the practice of anesthesiology has expanded to the preoperative environment and numerous locations outside the OR. Anesthetic Pharmacology: Basic Principles and Clinical Practice, second edition, is an outstanding therapeutic resource in anesthesia and critical care: Section 1 introduces the principles of drug action, Section 2 presents the molecular, cellular and integrated physiology of the target organ/functional system and Section 3 reviews the pharmacology and toxicology of anesthetic drugs. The new Section 4, Therapeutics of Clinical Practice, provides integrated and comparative pharmacology and the practical application of drugs in daily clinical practice. Edited by three highly acclaimed academic anesthetic pharmacologists, with contributions from an international team of experts, and illustrated in full colour, this is a sophisticated, user-friendly resource for all practitioners providing care in the perioperative period.

Editorial Reviews

'Despite being titled as a pharmacology text, there is significant coverage of the pathophysiology and practice of anaesthesia. The content is current, with several new drug compounds and theories of action described. This book complements the filtered down information found in many of the smaller texts recommended to trainees sitting exams and by increasing understanding of the subjects might aid long-term learning ... It provides an enormous amount of information to the reader in a clear and understandable format. As a reference text, it would be a bood addition to the library of an anaesthesiaor intensive care department.' The Journal of Anaesthesia

Book Description

Received this book in a timely manner after having to order at the last minute for school. Would recommend in the future. However, did not know this would be completed as a 2 volume set. The books my professors have are just one big book instead of a set of two. Not disappointed, just would have been nice to know.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible book September 12, 2013
By Bulldog
This book was assigned to the Pharmacology course I am teaching. Not my choice. The author has a horrid concept of "flow of idea", but jumps back and forth between subjects, never fully completing any of them. He speaks of subjects (Train of four), without explaining what it is? He spends pages describing sugammadex (not even approved in the US), but fails to describe even benadryl. Wastes time describing to the nth degree the structure of even the most abnormal receptors.

I purchased this book for a class in school. I find it very helpful and informative. Parts of it you may have to read more than once to understand but overall, great book!
