4.0 out of 5 stars Silver linings can be found in every situation., September 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Angel Behind the Rocking Chair: Stories of Hope in Unexpected Places (Paperback)
Pam Vredevelt writes from a Christian point of view. She is a wife of a man in the ministry, a woman who gives talks, and a mother of three. Their third child was born with down syndrone. Pam went through a period of depression. Slowly, she began to realize that there is beauty in having a "special needs" child. The messages of hope throughout this book make it an appropriate book to give to any friend who is going through a difficult time. (ie cancer, divorce, etc.) I received mine as a gift, and have dog eared pages to refer back to.

5.0 out of 5 stars It was thought provoking and inspirational, June 9, 1999
As Larry the Cucumber told Bob the Tomato after watching the story of Dave and the Giant Pickle - I laughed, I cried, it moved me Bob. This book wasn't exactly what I expected but I really enjoyed it. For a person who is a child of God and has often strayed from the family, Pam's words brought comfort and hit home. I also happen to have a little boy with Down Syndrome, which I why I originally bought the book, so her stories of Nathan were often like reading about my son. If you have an interest in Down Syndrome or any other special needs or if your heart just needs to be brought closer to God, I would recommend Angel Behind the Rocking Chair.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Spiritual Up for Down Syndrome, February 6, 1999
By A Customer
I was given this book as a gift from a coworker who has listened to my day to day dealings with my lovely daughter Carolyn. She was born with Down Syndrome and is now 4 years old. I have enjoyed reading it over and over and on days when I am feeling lost, and asking the 'why' questions, I pick it up and read one or more of the short stories to make me feel better. I truly enjoy the short story format, it enables us busy folks to take a short break, drop back and punt. and find the strength to help and enjoy our special children. It is also a great read for those who feel that life has dealt them a rough road. Sometimes the stories make me realize that my life is good, my cross to bear is much lighter than that of my brother or sister and that God is with us and loves us all.

I am the mother of a child with Down Syndrome. My neighbor gave me this book and it was at a time when I most needed it. Sometimes raising a child with a disability can be challenging and this gave me hope. I sent it to two other people who could also use the same hope at a difficult time. It is inspiring to know that these children are not alone. I learned that from this book and it helps us as we go on this journey. Thank you Pam Vredevelt!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope and inspiration for all situations., November 10, 2005

Someone gave me a copy of this book years ago when I was going through tough times. Though details of my situation were in no way similar to the author's, I could relate to the fears and spiritual/emotional struggles she faced. Her story of hope and spiritual strength helped me to face and then conquer my own fears. I have since given several copies of this book to other friends facing their own life struggles, and have received much positive feedback. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding God in Life's Dark Places, September 29, 1998

Remarkable insight into dealing with the loss of the "perfect" life or "perfect" child. The author shares her soul with the readers and in the process of doing so offers the reader the opportunity to find his or her soul and to realize hidden feelings and thoughts. Through the process God's abiding presence shines into life's dark places and makes it all seem easier to bear. A marvelous book that you will want to read again and again. You will want to share it with many who are struggling so order extra copies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughts from the mother of a child with Down Syndrome, September 3, 1998
By A Customer
I purchased this book to give to a friend who recently had a baby down Down Syndrome, and ended up reading it myself. It's very well-written and interesting, even if you don't know anyone with Down Syndrome. The principles the author sets forth can be applied to any "hard" situation in life. It's one of those "I've-been-there-and-I-survived-and-you-can-too" type books. I highly recommend it.
