Kindergarten-Grade 2?A little angel who is spending eternity learning to play the concertina decides to fly down to Earth between lessons. He plants a tree, and a young child who notices promises to keep it watered. Before he returns to heaven, the angel summons birds from the woods to please the youngster and leaves him a feather to tickle himself into laughing when he feels sad. Perhaps this tale is more whimsical and poetic in the original German. The translation, however, is choppy, stiff, and mannered. The illustrations are a mixture of photographs of real objects; basic, round-headed, cartoon figures; and splashy, bright, simplified scenes of the city, tree, birds, and sky.
