5.0 out of 5 stars Ten Gorgeous Songs About Death and Loss, February 6, 2004
By
This review is from: Angel Clare (Audio CD)
I got this record in 1973 as a gift when I just a kid at a very impressionable age and listened to it a lot, but lost track of it over the years as CD's replaced vinyl albums. I recently listened to the CD and heard the music for the first time in 20 years and had an interestingly complex reaction. I knew the music by heart and it brought back some very pleasant nostalgic memories. But my added life experience caused me to realize that this is a much darker record than I was able to comprehend as a kid. The production is state-of-the-art 1970's American pop, which means you can't find more beautiful work. And Garfunkel's famous tenor voice is thrilling. What I didn't realize at the time is how tenderly he sings about pain. loss, and death; evey song on the album is about these subjects. Check out his famous cover of Randy Newman's "Old Man" which is less shocking in its rawness than Newman's version, but no less devastating. Or "Mary Was an Only Child", which could be a Flannery O'Connor story set to music. Or Van Morrison's "I Shall Sing" which is about carrying on in the face of tragedy. Or a traditional song about murder ("Down in the Willow Garden") or a traditional song about the deaths of star-crossed lovers ("Barbara Allen"). These songs aren't sentimental; the orchestrations are full but restained and orginal at the same time. This remains a great album, one of the high points of mainstream American music in the '70's.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fine Debut Album, October 30, 2004
This review is from: Angel Clare (Audio CD)
"Angel Clare",released in 1973,showed that Artie could do very well without Paul Simon, just as Paul's excellent 1972 solo album showed he could make it on his own as well. While Garfunkel's output isn't as creative or adventurous as Simon's since Art didn't write most of his material, there's nonetheless a weath of quality music he's made throughout his career. And quality is in full supply on "Angel Clare",from the grand, lovely ballad "All I Know"(which was featured on the last first-season episode of Nip/Tuck),the jaunty Van Morrison-penned "I Shall Sing","Old Man","Mary Was An Only Child",and the traditional tunes "Barbara Allen" and "Feuilles-Oh/Do Space Men Pass Dead Souls On Their Way To The Moon?".Beautiful listening for any one with a great ear for music. Also recommended:Breakaway,Watermark,Fate For Breakfast,Scissors Cut,and Everthing Waits To Be Noticed.

I absolutely relate to A.K. Salmon's review. I loved this as a tape long ago, and when I heard "All I Know" on the Nip/Tuck finale, it literally brought tears to my eyes. Some lyrics just ring so powerfully true, and the purity of Garfunkel's voice just pierces right through you. It's two days since the show, and the song is still weaving through my head...

I've been looking for this ever since cd's took over. I have the original lp and just felt lost without the cd version. I'd been thinking about it for months and was totally rocked when Nip/Tuck used All I Know in their finale this season. This song is also a anthem of how my life is going right now. It speaks to all the pain my guy and I are going through to come together through the hurt of past loves. There is a song for every type of loss. Incredible Work of Music, Love, Loss and Art!!!!!

This album, Art's solo debut, is absolutely out of this world!! Art is in perfect form from the song to the last. To me, the most moving songs are "Old Man" and "Another Lullaby". Both just make me cry. Listen closely to the last verse of "Another Lullaby", and I think you will be thrilled by what you hear: Art (a tenor) hitting a LOW (bass) note! It was awesome! Chills just went down my spine when I heard him do that! Another touching song is "Mary Was An Only Child". All three are so beautiful. In the 5th track (which I'm not even going to attempt to spell), Art is very fluent in this foreign language (which I've heard is not French, but it's similar to it). Those who either have attended one of his concerts, or who own "Across America" will recognize "All I Know", but this is better, to my estimate. It's so beautiful! Buy this CD. You won't regret it.

I am 11 yrs. old I was 10 yrs. old when my dad introduced me to Angel Claire. I was expecting to hear some more of Dad's junk. We made a bet that I wouldn't like it. Then he put it on and I was speechless.(Darn, I still owe him 20 bucks.) If I am having a bad day I can turn this on and I feel great afterwards. Buy this CD and I guarantee you will walk away satisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where Garfunkel Outdoes Simon and Proves Worthy, December 9, 2005
This review is from: Angel Clare (Audio CD)
I was 12 when this Album came out in 1973, Soul Music was Happening, and captured most of My attention, I would Hear "All I Know" on the Radio, it basically bored Me, besides, everyone knew Paul Simon was the True Musician, His Lp from that Summer (There goes Rymin'Simon) had Happy, sometimes whimsical Pop Tunes that I could get into....Garfunkel? Blah....However, I had an Older Sister who blew Her Babysitting Money on this Record, I overhead Her playing the songs and...well...Damn, this is Pretty Singing, mostly Dark themes, Heartfelt Vocals, and Consistently Wonderful. "All I Know" is Terrific now, but "Woyaya" is frighteningly Beautiful! I would have never believed that 32 years later, it's Garfunkel that I own, No Simon at all (thanks largely to those awful Digipaks of His Cd's)....and all these other Reviewers Agree with Me!? Masterpiece INDEED

You won't regret ordering this CD.It has the most beautiful songs from beginning to end. I had the album from college in 1975 until I lost it in a flood in the summer of 93, which devistated me. My favorites are definetly,Lullabye and Feuilles-Oh, but the whole CD can't be outdone. It is hard NOT to feel this CD inside of you. It WILL have you crying by the last note, as it does me, just about everytime...My nurse was listening to it with me this morning, with tears in her eyes, and she had never heard it before. I am going to buy her this for Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow... Solo Art Garfunkel is incredibly underated!!!, January 27, 2006
By
This review is from: Angel Clare (Audio CD)
I heard all of the rumors... it's exactly what rock critics and the public love to do...
they love to turn a divorce into justification for one versus the other... whether it's John over Paul... and now, in this case Paul over Arty...

Well, despite the fact that everyone said Art's solo stuff didn't hold water... I have now bought three of his albums within the past two weeks... this one is a masterpiece from start to finish and is riddled with the sounds of Simon and Garfunkel...

I Guess I might be biased.. I'm a singer and Garfunkel just has the voice for me... it's not that I don't like Paul Simon's voice.. it's nice... but Art has passion, and emotion.. and is able to do all sorts of stuff with his voice (like a male Mariah Carey)
this guy also knows how to arrange well... just listen to his multi-tracked vocal arrangements.. they fit in so well with the impeccable production... This album may take atleast a few listens for most Simon and Garfunkel fans, but I can almost guarentee that you'll be hooked like I am eventually.
