Best anime Cop show,
By Yui Hongo (Somewhere in North America) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Angel Cop: Collection [VHS] (VHS Tape)
It's kind of strange how I ended up buying Angel cop the collection. I had seen a commerical for this once that showed Angel taking her helmet off over and over again, because her partner was shocked to find out this his new partner was a tough, female cop (Angel). After seeing this cheesy commerical I thought that it something I definately didn't want to waste my time or money on. Later on I saw a review for this series in an anime magazine it sounded interesting enough. The thing that made me finally decide to give it a chance was the length and at that time I was buying anime based on length hoping to get more for my money which is definately not a recommended strategy for purchasing anime. I was extermely lucky with this one. This is one of the best cop shows in all of anime. There is plenty of story, action, violence, profanity, and interesting characters to satisfy any action-junkie. Also Angel's ride was pretty phat! The drawback is the dubbing. It wasn't all that great. Some people did some extremely bad acting and when other people cursed it sounded forced. Based on the amount of graphic violence, strong language, and nudity I would recommend this to mature viewers 17 and up.

Will stay implanted in your mind,

A few people who have seen this movie will argue that it has no story, is too long, and drags violence on and on and on. This movie does have a plot, and a very good one at that. A branch of police called the special security force deals with terrorism in Tokyo. They stop the terrorists, but then find out that they are just a cover-up for a branch of government accepting money from an American company to dump waste in the rural regions of Japan. That is the background of the story. When watching this movie, be sure to pay attention. As for all of the violence that drags on and on, a lot of it can be best summarized with one word; disturbing. This movie can bring about a lot of disturbing moments, but you won't be able to stop watching. As for length, it is good to see some anime longer than 40 minutes. All in all, after seeing this tape you most likely will not be able to stop thinking about it. The outcome is rather exciting. There will be moments where you will enjoy certain explosions, and others where you will say, "Why did that have to happen?"

End of the World,
By coopertex (CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Angel Cop Collection (DVD)
Angel cop started well enough, to keep me watching each episode to the last. Much of the story seemed like a action story with shootings, car chases, and plenty of explosions. Then the anime took a supernatural twist with the telepaths, teleporters and firestarter, and the showdowns against Lucifer. Lucifer was too powerful she had the ability to levitate herself, people and objects and killed anyone with her grip. Many of the scenes were very gruesome, with blood splatters, guts and lots of profanity to boot. I understood what the creators were doing when they named characters Angel and Lucifer. I knew they were trying to convey their own version of the world apocalypse. They conveyed this well by making Lucifer almost invincible and very sadistic. In one scene she ripped a woman in half and a man was reduced to a pulp of blood. In another scene she got shot in the head and had her arm ripped off, but she healed herself and grew a new arm. The animation and character design was excellent though a bit outdated by todays standards. The sound effects were good, but sometimes a bit subdued and drowned out by the odd music. An Epic battle contained in a six episode series with pretty good action. I must comment that the english dubbing sucked. For adults only. All episodes continued. Ends on episode 6. I also recommend the anime mini-series called, "Iria".

Psychic VS Cyborgs (160mins in a 6-part film),
By
This review is from: Angel Cop Collection (DVD)
This movie is as deep as you wanna make it. Watch it (subbed!) and decide if you think it's about human evolution VS scientify revolution OR a lame and violent "Robocop" rip-off. Generally, if you like sci-fi flicks, chances are that this one is gonna be a classic. However, if you're more into comedy and drama and can't stand sci-fi pretentions, then stay away by all means. Though one thing is for sure: this is not for kids! Although there is no true sexual content, the language and graphical nature of this movie is extreme.

A progressive anime from bad to good.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Angel Cop: Collection [VHS] (VHS Tape)
First off, lets rid ourselves of the misconceptions about this video. She does not wear that scantly clad suit or anything like that in the movie, sorry guys. Second, Angel is just her name, no super powers for her. Third, there is nothing angelica about this lady till the last two episodes, if you get my drift. Now, as my title shows, this anime progresses from bad to good. The first two episodes were only meant to set the foundation of the last four episodes, i.e. watch this movie all at one time or else you'll think you got jipped after the first two, and miss out. The episodes progressively get more violent, which is great and the introduction of psychic powers and cyborg elements make it even better. I only wish to that they would go more into the background of Angel, since she is the main character and to understand why she was so cold at first, but since they didn't do that for any of the characters, no exception was made for her. From my experience, with anime, I wouldn't say shes worth buying unless you like collecting anime. I may be wrong though, I did watch this movie with little sleep and a desire to see lots of violence. In other words, if you can't find it a rental place, might as well buy it. Nothing better than seeing an anime that ties up its loose ends.

A good anime not the best but most definetly not the worse.,

I liked this move a good deal. It it a little violent but then most Anime's are. The hero in this move is also not all good, like you would find in alot of American moves. But in the end although many die she comes out victorious. It has a good stroy and some intersting twists at the end, I think if you see it you will enjoy it.

ANGEL COP COLLECTION,

I really liked this. I've watched tons of anime and take it as seriously as any true fan. I like the more cerebral stuff like Rah Xephon, and Technolyze too, but this is one of my favourites. There is a good level of swearing, but not as much as the other reviews led me to think. The animation is also better than what it sounds (Check out the first graphic scene where a head is blown open) As for the voice dubbing, again this isnt as bad as other reviews make it sound. I've heard far worse choices than this. I thought the voice acting for the main characters was really good. They had the right attitude to pull off the anarchic nature of their on screen characters. You can't take this one too seriously, it's not that kind of anime. It's crazy, and that makes it funny. It's a fun ride, not a thought provoking one. You can get a handle on the plot in the other reviews. The only reason it might be confusing is because certain elements involving anti-semitism were rightly changed. Nothing has been deleted, they just altered the dialogue, even on the subtitles for the Japanese language.

a forgotten classic,
By Lars Kingbeard (Galipoli) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Angel Cop Collection (DVD)
This anime features beautiful animation, tons of gore, and profanity like only a late 80's early 90's anime could. Its a non-stop thrill ride that crams more action and intensity into six episodes than most shows do in thirty, or 60, or ever. Each episode is a compact little gem of twists and turns and carefully choreagraphed violence. The drawing is at times fantastic and there are quite a few memorable shots such as that of the female psychic, lucifer, perched sideways on a wheeless chopper as it balances just above the crest of an incoming tsunami.
There are a couple drawbacks to the series and the dvd. First, the animation quality is noticeably uneven, particularly in the climactic episode six. Here the drawing style abruptly becomes much simpler and the faces frequently take on an odd genial cast that is completely at odds with the situation. The frame rate also drops and there are numerous anatomical and facial distortions. Apparently, it took over 5 years for the six episodes to be completed in Japan, and each one features a different director who brought a slightly, or in the case of episode 6 dramatically, different approach to the animation. Arguably, the story and characters could also have used more time to develop, and some people may consider this a flaw as well. The other big drawback here concerns the terrible dvd transfer by manga video. Its not the worst I've ever seen (that would be Amon Saga, also from manga), but its pretty bad. Clearly, manga transferred this show directly from vhs and it features the screen jitter and color distortion you would expect, and even goes so far as to include the old advertisements for the individual vhs episodes during the closing credits. Despite the flaws, Angel Cop remains a classic from anime's bygone golden age. Its combination of intense action, ultraviolence, cyberpunk, and impeccable drawing is something that you rarely if ever see in modern shows. If you ask me, thats a shame.

really good anime!,

Well, I have to say that there is better anime out there, but this is a very entertaining anime. For one, it has very nice action scenes and has decent dubbing. On the downside, the animation looked a little old and the story may not be the best, but this anime sure has it's kicks. The character Angel is at first drawn poorly, but then, somehow, she looks better and better. Finally, despite its downsides, I highly recommend Angel Cop to be in everyones anime collections.
