Unlike New York City, downtown Philadelphia slept after three a.m. All was quiet around the area of 8th and Race Streets. The Chinatown stores and restaurants were closed for the night, but would soon be awakened to the early morning sounds of merchants selling their wares. On Delaware Avenue the dance clubs were shutting down, cutting the lights that had earlier bathed the street in a wash of throbbing, pulsating neon. The masses of weekend merrymakers would be going home, some alone and some with a new friend. Some who had too much to drink would not be coming home at all. Manhole covers and steam vents spewed noxious clouds of heat from below. Homeless people huddled around them in the cold night air, trying to keep the November chill off their broken bodies. Some drank. Some were high from the drug of their choice. Some slept at the risk of never waking up. A few blocks away, the only lights that could be seen were coming from the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, connecting Philadelphia to Camden, New Jersey. On the first floor of Police Headquarters, or the Roundhouse, as it was commonly called, Detective B. Angelo worked through the night. The Homicide unit, tucked away in the corner of the building in room 104, operated twenty-four-seven. Detective Angelo sat at her desk with a mountain of paperwork stacked high upon it. Anyone passing by may have thought her a very disorganized individual-far from it. Detective Angelo, also known as Bee, BA, or Bad Ass, for no one knew her first name, was the most organized and capable detective in the unit. About the Author
Angel of Death, a police drama by Rosanna Filippello, will be released in November 2003, and is the first book in the ‘B. Angelo Mystery Series’. Rosanna, who is a 10-year veteran police officer, stationed in the "Fighting" Fourteenth District of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was born and bred in the 'City of Brotherly Love'. Ms. Filippello currently resides in the East Oak Lane section of the city with three cats and her daughter, Gabrielle.
Filippello was born and raised in Philadelphia, Penn. and graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School in 1986. She then attended Temple University for a time before joining the police force in 1993. Filippello works as a patrol officer in the "Fighting" Fourteenth District of the city. A lover of writing since a young child, she acquired a thirst for reading while growing up. This cop's got it where it matters! (in the book, I mean),

There's no need to recap the plot as it's mentioned several times above, so I'll get right to my "critique."
First, let me say I enjoyed this book. The actual reading of it was easy, clear and not once did I have to reread a paragraph or sentence to reacquaint myself with what was going on. (You know how sometimes you get lost in the text and have to reread a section or two; not in this book.) Filippello is clear in explaining to you what's happening in any given scene. The characters are all in all well rounded and, since this book is the first in a series, are destined to be even more so. The most enjoyable aspect of Filippello's story was the hidden light of passion behind each page, a light that shone with her love of being a police officer. I don't think any author, no matter what research they did, could make the cops in this book as real as they came across. From the dialogue to the mannerisms, this is true police behavior. The kind of stuff you'd see happening in the background of an "NYPD Blue" episode, but even more so. Except Filippello brings it all to the foreground and, for the duration of the book, you feel like you're a cop yourself. Book Two, I'm sure, is going to be even better. At least, that's the goal of an author (I hope)-to improve their craft and show said improvement in their latest release. I do it, and I know others who do it too. If I were forced to nitpick this book, there's not much I could say. I would only suggest that the intensity of the deaths be taken up a notch and for the book's ending not to have felt like it was rushed. This is not a bad thing, mind you, but I wanted to live in the resolution a little longer and/or experience each second in the final moments before the killer is revealed and the protagonist's reaction to that revelation, and any and all action that followed. This is a good read. Buy it. I'm waiting for Book Two. A.P. Fuchs

Bought the book on a whim. I've ordered the next two. Wonderful story with great characters."Bee" is so caring about the victims and feels everyone should work like her. How she relates to her famous husband brought tears to my eyes. Can't wait to read the next ones.

Who Better To Write A Police Mystery Than A Police Officer?,

In the first book "Angel of Death," followed by a second book "Angel of Justice," in the "Angelo Mystery Series," penned by veteran Philadelphia Police Officer Rosanna Filippello, the reader is left anxious to read more.
The novels give readers an inside view of the Philadelphia police force at work. They allow one to see Philadelphia, "the city of brotherly love," in all it's splendor. It's a view that only a native to the area could offer. Filippello goes on to allow readers to glimpse the night life, the streets after dark, officers working diligently throughout the night to catch a serial killer. These books bring out the best of the Philadelphia police force with their portrayal of the heroic and self-sacrificing men and women ever vigilant in their surveillance of the city. Filippello, offers insight into these officers, both male and female, subtly bonding as family while working shoulder to shoulder to protect the sleepy, unsuspecting city of Philadelphia and the people they love. Angelo shows her power and intelligence as she leads, follows up on clues, and ultimately bags the bad guy. We glimpse her compassion and insight into the criminal mind as she interviews one suspect after another. She has a knack for reading people and the ability to put differences aside when work calls. Anyone who reads these books will be anxious to read the third one in the series. It is obvious to those of us who know and work with Rosanna Filippello that she is a rising star in the literary world. Just keep in mind that "Angel of Death," is only the first book in the "Angelo Mystery Series," and readers should buy other books is the series because they are real page turners..
