Book Description

October 1, 2008
This fascinating book puts the spotlight on working dogs — those heroic canines who have found ways to give back more than sloppy kisses and happy snuggles. The courageous dogs you will meet include:

— Keno, a yellow Lab, who rescued a lift operator buried in an avalanche.
— Kobi, a beloved and intelligent family pet with an exceptional sense of smell, who became one of the most famous cancer-sniffing dogs in the world.
— Tuffy, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, who served as a grief counselor with Dr. Karla Rose during the horrible days following the Virginia Tech shootings.
— Abdul, the first service dog for people with mobility impairments, who was trained by Bonnie Bergin and Kerrill Knaus-Hardy and paved the way for people with disabilities to be independent.
— Anna, a German shepherd, who damaged her lungs searching through the wreckage at Ground Zero after 9/11 and inspired Sarah Atlas to found an assistance program for volunteer search-and-rescue dog handlers.
— Skidboot, the world-famous Texas blue heeler, who performed for Jay Leno, Oprah Winfrey, and David Letterman and on Animal Planet (with cowboy and entertainer David Hartwig) but started life as an abandoned puppy.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Another irresistible gift to the animal lovers of the world. This gorgeous collection of brilliant stories is a tribute to the fact that many of our most effective doctors, nurses, therapists, police officers, emotional counselors, rescue workers, and spiritual teachers have four legs instead of two.”
— Amelia Kinkade, author of Straight from the Horse’s Mouth

“This book blurs — truly dismantles — the supposed line between the feelings that humans experience and those present in animals. Angel Dogs with a Mission will change your life and the lives of those with whom you share it.”
— from the foreword by Marc Bekoff, PhD, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals

“As teachers, friends, therapists, healers, and rescuers, dogs enrich our lives immensely. They don’t ask much in return — a tummy rub, a smile, a game of fetch. Our world would be much poorer without dogs like those in this book and our homes.”
— Nancy Peterson, Feral Cat Program Manager, The Humane Society of the United States

5.0 out of 5 stars One book that will truly touch you, December 20, 2008
This review is from: Angel Dogs with a Mission: Divine Messengers in Service to All Life (Paperback)
This collection of true stories about dogs who have helped people is so inspiring! Every story is different, but all the dogs mentioned have helped people in one way or another.

For example, there was Leaf, a spaniel rescued from an animal shelter. Leaf had clearly been abused. When he woke up "disoriented with anxiety that escalated into full-blown panic attacks" (p225). It took time and love to help Leaf overcome his anxieties.

When Leaf's new owner was diagnosed with a brain aneurysms and blood clots in his legs, it was Leaf's turn to repay the love his new owner had lavished on him. I won't spoil the story by telling you how, but it really moved me.

But then, all the stories are moving. You will not forget the story Anna, who searched through the wreckage at the World Trade center bombing.

This is one book you will cherish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and heartwarming read for all animal lovers!, December 3, 2008
By
This review is from: Angel Dogs with a Mission: Divine Messengers in Service to All Life (Paperback)
NOTE: This review may lean toward the biased since my therapy dog's story is told in this book. But would like to think, despite this fact, I can provide compelling reasons why this book would make a delightful addition to your personal library.

Admittedly, I had never read any of the Angel Animal books until receiving a phone call from the authors asking if I'd be interested in sharing my therapy dog's story for their upcoming book...Angel Dogs with a Mission. Immediately read the entire book upon receipt of my complimentary copy. This is definitely the type of book one gravitates toward on a yucky evening when the day has been deplorably awful and you need a pick-me-up that the boob-tube can't provide.

The 20 heartwarming stories tell of dogs providing a wide array of services to mankind in all life's venues. They help to teach the young, comfort the grieving, find the lost, assist the handicapped, reach at-risk teens...

Angel Dogs with a Mission is an inspirational book not only for animal lovers but for all who seek additional affirmation that God does work in mysterious and wonderful ways! Not to mention affirmation that there are many people in these tumultuous times that unselfishly give of themselves through their companion animals in service to mankind regardless of ethnicity, gender, age, socioeconomic status, etc.

This is a book that I will be sharing with my grandchildren and other youth in hopes they will one day be inspired to help others through their very own Angel Dogs.

5.0 out of 5 stars a positive book about dogs, March 18, 2010
This review is from: Angel Dogs with a Mission: Divine Messengers in Service to All Life (Paperback)
I have had several angel dogs in my life. THis book tells people's stories about how dogs helped them and how they survived because of a dog... or became more enlightened because of them. Some people just do not understand dogs... this book will really help!Autumn of Blessed Acres service dog
