5.0 out of 5 stars ah, the good old days, May 11, 2004

if i remember it correctly, i was in the 6th grade when i first heard this album. i was listening to a program called channel z on a local college rock station and they played knitting. i was hooked from the word go. it is such a shame that this album is so difficult to find. on second thought, perhaps it is for the best. that way, it never finds its way into over exposure, and it remains one of my personal music secrets for all eternity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny, inspiring and heartbreaking..., September 2, 2011
This review is from: Angel Food for Thought (Audio CD)
This CD came out during my formative years and spoke to so many of my adolescent feelings, and I've loved it ever since. Meryn cuts to the quick on tracks with her fierce, piercing lyrical genius. From funny anecdotal spoken word tracks such as "Flight Attendant" and "Job Application", to haunting melodies on "I Say" and "Barbie". There's so much more here than the quirky "The Sweater" that's worth listening to. I hope the re-issue can speak to those coming of age now like it did when when originally released.

We listened to this on tape non-stop in college, but when polling a few friends months ago, no one had a surviving copy. So, what better suprise than to buy them one for xmas! It's really a wonderful weird sing-along album.

5.0 out of 5 stars She Changed My Life, January 28, 2008
This review is from: Angel Food for Thought (Audio CD)
A friend gave me a tape of this CD back in the early 1990s, when I was a teenager visiting a college. It wasn't labeled, though, and for years I listened to this album over and over, never knowing the name of the artist. No one had ever heard of the songs. When I wore the tape out after nearly a decade of heavy playing, I literally wept.

As a young adult, different songs touched me at different times, but they are all extremely powerful and thought provoking. "Angel Food for Thought" is a must-have for any young feminist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it just for "The Sweater"..., September 15, 2007
This review is from: Angel Food for Thought (Audio CD)
Anyone who's heard this CD (I own the original, not this enhanced version) knows The Sweater (sometimes referred to as "Ape Sweater"). I've read that Meryn taught creative humor writing at UBC and sometimes lives in NY, so people in Vancouver and NY may know her music better than some other markets, although the Sirius comedy channel sometimes plays songs from this CD. I like to write humor (humour for the Canadians out there) so maybe that's why this caught my attention, way back in 1990. Sweater is very funny and -- like most good humor -- based on some truth. It just oozes early 1980's, Valley-girl high school talk, adolescent embarrassment, and a funny story. It is so original that I still remember the first time I ever heard it, where I was, what I was doing, as I listened to it on a distant AM transmitter on 800KHz, a song which didn't fit any station's format. The remainder of the CD is equally eclectic material, some similar to Sweater, and some just very original though perhaps not quite as riveting. I'm intrigued by this enhanced release, including a video of Sweater. I suspect I will give-in and buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully quirky album, July 9, 2007
This review is from: Angel Food for Thought (Audio CD)
I always loved "The Sweater," but the rest of the album showcases Meryn's unique, off-beat style just as well. She is quirky and hilarious.

not mainstream, but incredible talent! the intelligence and wit, sincerity and sarcasm made this album an immediate favorite of mine. "bumble bee" is still my favorite, but i enjoy listening to the whole thing start to finish. in addition to her content and writing, i enjoy listening (and singing along) with meryn cadell's pleasant voice.
