Old Friendships Die Hard, July 16, 2006
This review is from: Angel: Old Friends (Graphic Novel) (Angel (IDW Publishing)) (Paperback)
In this, the follow-up to IDW's brilliant Angel, the Curse, Angel again finds himself tangled up in strands of his past. This time, it appears Spike has lost his soul and once again become a ruthless killer. The only way Angel can help stop his former protégé is to team up with Charles Gunn, who survived the last apocalyptic battle of Angel season 5. But strange things are definitely afoot when another Spike shows up, this one still on the side of the white hats. Things spiral even more out of control when other people from Angel's past how up. At one point almost every major character in the show has a cameo of one sort or another.
While Angel, the Curse was quite excellent, it pales to this volume. Jeff Mariotte has obvious reacquainted himself with the characters and Messina has hit his stride in rendering everyone with photographic precision. The plot is fun and fast paced, forcing you to keep turning the page.
Easily, this is one of the best and brightest additions to the Angel/Buffy library and would be a welcome addition to any fans collection. However, it is done in such a way that a newcomer that did not know about the show or the characters could still enjoy the story.
Highly recommended.

Angel Family Reunion, July 30, 2006
This review is from: Angel: Old Friends (Graphic Novel) (Angel (IDW Publishing)) (Paperback)
In Angel: Old Friends we get to see the gang back together, attempting to find out whos making doubles of everybody, evil doubles! Its nice to see that they survived the events of the TV series finale, however it ends with many unanswered questions other than the ones concerning the results of that apocalyptic battle in "Not Fade Away". This would be a welcome addition to the libraries of longtime fans, but unlike Angel: The Curse, this can only be fully appreciated by those who know their trivia. The artwork is great and sets the mood very well, however the story would not have made a great episode. Not recomended for the story, but if your interested in finding out how everybodys doing, pick it up.

Graphic SF Reader, September 3, 2007
This review is from: Angel: Old Friends (Graphic Novel) (Angel (IDW Publishing)) (Paperback)
This story is post battle in the alley at the end of the last season. Angel has been off doing a hermit thing, and Gunn has come to track him down. He has a problem in Los Angeles he needs his help with, and cannot handle alone (of course).
The problem he has seen is Spike, running around slaughtering things. That piques his interest. An evil twin and mad scientist plot ensues.
