Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Stanford Diehl's first novel, Angel in the Front Room, Devil Out Back, Jackson Moon has returned to Solomon's Rock, Ga., 20 years after he ran from witnessing the cruel power plays of his father and his good ol' boy cronies. He might solve the old puzzles, if he can outsmart the powerful people who want him dead.

From Booklist

Nearly a quarter century ago, in Solomon's Rock, Georgia, a fire broke out at the local roadhouse. The workingwomen who lived upstairs and their customers were all killed. Jackson Moon's lawyer father took payoffs from the man who owned the roadhouse, including one shortly before the fire erupted. Moon's disgust over his father's involvement precipitated his leaving home. Now, after 20 years away--the last few in prison--Moon needs to understand the tragedy. Not everyone shares his interest in local history. Michael "Ghost" Grant, whose empire is built on drug money, is marshaling his associates--criminal and legit--to construct a multimillion-dollar Civil War theme park, and if Moon connects him to the fire, the whole deal could collapse. Diehl's first novel is a southern gothic descendant of In the Heat of the Night. Greed, racism, and an entrenched caste system all conspire to perpetuate the mentality of the Old South, minus the Gone with the Wind gentility. A brooding, suspenseful, and satisfying thriller. 4.0 out of 5 stars Nitty, Gritty Southern Ditty, October 10, 2003

This review is from: Angel in the Front Room, Devil Out Back (Hardcover)
What a page-turner! This action suspense thriller set in Georgia has all the local color and spice you'd expect from a small southern town. The characters are rich and real and the mood is right. The story is very visual and much like watching a film. The action is not for the light-hearted, though; it is graphic and gritty and pervasive. Also, there are many characters, but they are all effectively woven into a complex tale of small-town power, lies, and secrets, eventually ripped apart by the tenacious protagonist, Jackson Moon. A great read!
