Format: Hardcover
Elizabeth Choate Spykman lived from 1898 to 1956 and wrote 4 books about the Cares children, which are thought to be autobiographical. They certainly have a vividness that endears them to the imagination and to the memory and are all four intensely readable.

A Lemon and a Star - 1955
The Wild Angel - 1957
Terrible, Horrible Edie - 1960
Edie on the Warpath - 1966 (published posthumously)

All are beautifully written and deserve to remain in print, and are classics in evoking their time and place.

E. C. Spykman deserves to be remembered--and reprinted--forever. Her four lively and superbly-written books on the Cares children--set in the early 20th century, and semi-autobiographical--are masterpieces. I am 67 years old, and had not read this since childhood. I adored it. I would compare her in greatness to the true greats--E. Nesbit and Elizabeth Enright. That is the highest compliment I can bestow on any writer for children.
