Red Classroom is a masterpiece from Chusei Sone, Nikkatsu’s star in-house director in the early days of romanporno (romantic pornography). It is also one of the most morally disturbing and ambiguous examples of the genre. Muraki, a publisher of a small erotic publication, becomes obsessed by an actress in a hard-core underground porn movie that involves multiple rape. He determines to track her down. When he finally finds her, Nami, now a young woman, tells him that the rape was real. It has continued to haunt her existence. This film, with its restless camera, explores the twists and turns of their relationship subsequent to this revelation, culminating in a mire of total degradation.

During a small "screening," basically a room of middle-aged men, of a blue film, erotic photographer Muraki Tetsuro falls quickly infatuated with the young woman in the film. Her performance is so real that Muraki becomes obsessed with having her for himself. Muraki eventually finds her when he calls up a love hotel for a photo shoot and discovers that she is the receptionist. He quickly goes to talk to her and eventually the two end up in a hotel room with the woman, Nami, stripping and wanting to prostitute herself for Muraki. He turns down her proposition and states that he will meet her the next day. However, Muraki is arrested the next day after the police discover that a fifteen-year-old girl had posed for some of his photos. These circumstances leave Nami standing in the rain waiting for Muraki, but instead of heading home, she takes another man to a love hotel. Will Muraki have the chance to meet Nami again? Who knows, but for most viewers of this film that question is hardly an issue.
The second film in the Angel Guts series, Red Classroom is more sexually graphic than its predecessor High School Coed (1978), however, unlike that film in which women, even very young girls, are preyed upon by men, in this film the tables are turned a bit and true sexual predator is Nami. In her scene with the business man in the hotel it appears that the director is trying to display the potency of female sexuality versus that of male sexuality when the man becomes weaker with each successive organism as Nami gains strength. The business man in fact seems frightened of Nami's desire as he is trying to rest. Another interesting aspect of this film is that it references itself. I have stated before in some of my previous reviews that some pink film directors, namely Wakamatsu Koji, attempted to bring a more artistic edge to his soft porn creations. However, because the main point of pink films is to titillate, often their more artistic endeavors will be ignored by their audiences. Muraki laments that it he created photos or a film that he considered artistically satisfying, it would either be shelved or heavily edited so it could satisfy target audiences. Unfortunately this aspect of the film is quickly dropped and it devolves into quite a mess. While it is a better film than High School Coed, There is really little that makes a Red Classroom a film that should be seen by those interested in seedier Japanese films that came out when the Japanese film industry was in a giant lull. Definitely, if they can be found, check out Wakamatsu's offerings before delving into this series.

The female of the species,

The name of this film, "Angel Guts: Red Classroom" ("Tenshi no Harawata: Akai Kyoshiitsu"), is somewhat misleading. It is an overly-sensational title, which leads one to think that this is going to be a far more exploitative film than it is.
"Red Classroom" is, of course, one of the infamous Nikkatsu pink films based on the comic series by Ishii Takashi (Freeze Me, Flower & Snake). However, instead of a "boobs and blood" spectacle, director Sone Chusei (Immortal Love) turned in a well-photographed, intelligent and challenging film with almost artistic pretensions. The story opens with an underground screening of a rape film, the kind of film that most people will assume "Red Classroom" actually is. Right off the bat the director is playing with your assumptions. The scene cuts to a group of overcoat-clad men watching the film, and we realize we have been misled. One of the men, a professional photographer named Tetsuro (Kanie Keizo, Zatoichi - Darkness Is His Ally), becomes fascinated with how real the actress Nami (Mizuhara Yuuki "Naomi") seemed, and arranges a meeting with her. His fantasies are crushed however, as she disrobes unemotionally and prepares to prostitute herself. Tetsuro is shocked and rendered impotent by Nami's sexual aggression, and tries to leave, but in a reversal of roles Nami traps him into a marathon of sex, almost raping him instead, demanding that he perform again and again, and belittling his manhood if he can't fulfill her desires. This is what makes "Red Classroom" stand out. The female sexual aggressor is rare in Japanese pink films, as is the length of the sex scene, which goes on and on and Nami drains Tetsuro of all his energy until he is just her physical toy with no willpower of his own. Of course, as with all pink films from this era, the sex is much more implied than shown, and much of the artistry of the camera is in how to show the rawness of what is happening without crossing the censors. There is plenty of nudity, to be sure, but tops only as was typical of the time. I also really enjoyed how director Sone played with his own artistic longings, and you can hear the characters speaking with his voice. Longing to make something other than pink films, he doesn't really get the chance because "art doesn't sell". Even within the genre, he has some clever things to say. My favorite scene is when Tetsuro is shooting a model on the beach, in a schoolgirl costume that is slowly being stripped away. There is discussion about what the model's motivation is, what she would be doing on a beach getting naked, and the photographer says "This isn't art! We don't need to make an excuse just to show a beautiful naked woman!" Which is, of course, exactly what Sone had just done.

Capt. Freaky here to let all you freaks out there know this entire series of "Angel Guts" films suck...big time!
Notice that I watched this on "Dec 7th"...this film turned out to be another "bomb" from the Japanese! ha ha Unless you can tolerate 79 mins of poor actors barking out words in Japanese...and senseless scenes that are so far from being erotic... that they aren't even funny! I thought these new releases from Artsmagic DVD's would be very exciting and interesting to watch. Unfortunately, these old films barely qualify as "R" rated...even by today's standards. If this film were compared to "Salo", or "The Image", or even "Emannuel In America"...it fails miserably. There are no real crotch or pubic shots of any of the girls...because Japanese laws prohibit it! So you end up seeing a lot of panty shots...big deal!!! I can't find one "redeeming, "stimulating sexual value" to recommend this film to anyone. I give it ZERO stars. Save your money and purchase a better erotica flick...made in the '70's in Europe. While they may often be "cheesy" and contain "average acting" and "bizzare soundtracks", they always use young hot girls, and have a scene or two that'll make your pants bubble up...and your girlfriend reach for her electric dildo!....but not this loser! I have to go turn it back in and get my money back....
